EXCITING NEWS: Starting in spring 2025, we will be launching The Generative Museum, a digital initiative that will open the doors of our galleries virtually as construction continues on our physical space designed by ZGF Architects. We’re excited to partner with the nonprofit arts organization KADIST on this project, and with the artist-run virtual exhibition space EPOCH, whose scenography will help bring our galleries to life in the digital realm. Hey! Did you know the Pittsburgh Art Book Fair is coming up Sept 28-29 at the Carnegie Museum of Art? Miller ICA will offer free and discounted rare artist publications you won’t want to miss!

In May, the Miller ICA concluded programming in our former home in the Purnell Center for the Arts and now begins to prepare to open as ICA Pittsburgh in its stunning new space in the RK Mellon Hall of Sciences in 2027.

As construction continues on our new home, the Miller ICA has concluded operations in our former space at the Purnell Center for the Arts and is actively planning for our future as ICA Pittsburgh. In this interim period, we will be launching a series of in-person and online initiatives reflecting the innovative, cross-disciplinary spirit that has always guided the ICA.

“so that nothing of what you have said may come upon me”

This space was created in the face of an early midlife crisis. With a perceived lack of direction in life and an abrupt dissolvement of identity, I found myself reflecting on my relationships with religion, spiritualism, agnosticism and artmaking as frameworks to find footing in a reality that feels inconceivable. Recently, I’ve found myself drawn to using different forms of wood in my practice. As a material and entity, wood strangely embodies an aura of lively vigor as much as it feels like a life form that is indeed dead. The thought of feeling like I’m working with corpses has been in the back of my mind for a few years now. Other materials speak to a mental image of an interior, domestic space in which one’s identity is held. My work process has always been intuitive in terms of form, scale and color. What remains constant and identifiable across these works is the form of the cross that continuously asserts itself throughout the space. Overlapping, obscuring and coming in and out of view.

There are allusions to reverence, blasphemy, terror, and confusion. Above it is a search for answers that aren’t necessarily correct but that are at least comforting

The artist will present her latest installation in Second Degree Vision, entitled Magic Hour, which she developed as an Artist in Residence at the Pittsburgh Glass Center, working in both the kiln shop and hot shop. Georgia’s work combines glass sculptures and video projections to produce liquid, unstable, spellbinding images as light forms that explore dreamworld logics and feminist imaginaries. The artist will discuss the making of this body of work and her research into the role of glass objects in magical fiction, like the crystal ball and magic mirror, that orient their viewer towards non-rational and magical ways of seeing.

About the artist:
Georgia Saxelby is an installation artist whose work explores architectural imaginaries within dreams, fiction, and fairytales. Her thesis installation, Magic Hour, is a series of glass sculptures with video projections that together produce liquid, unstable, spellbinding images as light forms. Leveraging glass’s transparency and optical distortions, the sculptures act simultaneously as image, lens and frame, becoming portal-like devices dispersing shimmering refractions and projected images in an immersive installation. For this body of work, Saxelby has been researching the role of glass objects in magical fiction, like the crystal ball and magic mirror, that orient their viewer towards non-rational ways of seeing and magical modes of consciousness.
