On Liberty: A Summoning is a site-responsive exhibition and performance project by the contemporary artist Marianne Vitale rooted in the layered social and cultural history of 812/818 Liberty Avenue. Over the twentieth century, the building housed a succession of influential nightlife and performance venues, including The Liberty Theater, The Music Box, The Staircase Lounge, Villa Madrid, The Pin Up Lounge, The Twilight Room, Lenny Litman’s Copa, and Pegasus which functioned as radically open spaces for music, performance, q***r nightlife, and gathering. Vitale reanimates this history through sculpture, performance, film, and printed matter, creating a project that operates simultaneously as a formal exhibition and a series of live, time-based activations. Installed within a bar-and-stage framework referencing the site’s former nightclub configurations, the exhibition remains open daily as a sculptural environment and transforms into a functioning club during the Cultural Trust’s Final Fridays Gallery Crawls between May and October.

Marianne Vitale On Liberty: A Summoning is guest curated by Benjamin Tischer in collaboration with the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.

Reception Invitation ☕🍩🎉

Meet the Artist: Katarzyna Perlak
In Conversation with Anastasia James, Director of Public Art & Galleries

🗓️ Wednesday, March 4, 2026
🕥 10:30 AM
📍 Wood Street Galleries, Floor 2

Join us for a special reception celebrating the opening of The land beneath sleeps lightly and meet the artist, Katarzyna Perlak.

The morning will feature a conversation between Perlak and Anastasia James, Director of Public Art & Galleries.

Originally commissioned for Liverpool Biennial 2025 (BEDROCK), “The land beneath sleeps lightly” was made in collaboration with First Take and participants from their REEL: Q***r programme. The film is set within the decaying opulence of the Adelphi Hotel, a site dense with memory, fantasy, and unresolved histories. Once a destination for wealthy travellers, the hotel’s deteriorating interiors now fuel legends and myths. Through a non-linear, dreamlike structure shaped by repetition and disorientation, the film draws on the affective language of horror to explore q***r becoming under conditions of precarity. The Adelphi is reimagined as a haunted architecture where desire lingers, bodies shift, and identities remain unstable, allowing decay, monstrosity, and transformation to become sites of intimacy, resistance, and possibility.

Katarzyna Perlak: The land beneath us sleeps lightly

🗓️ March 4 – March 22, 2026
📍 Wood Street Galleries, Floor 2

Wood Street Galleries is excited to present “The land beneath us sleeps lightly” by Katarzyna Perlak, a Polish-born contemporary artist based in London, UK. Perlak’s multidisciplinary practice includes moving image, performance, textiles, sculpture, and installation, and explores how history, tradition, and identity are constructed, remembered, and embodied. Drawing on feminist, q***r, and diasporic perspectives, she re-examines folklore, craft, and affect as alternative forms of knowledge, and investigates the potential of affect as a tool for registering and archiving both present, continuous experience and past historical moments.
