Fossilized

An exploration of time, texture, and the quiet permanence of the natural world.

In this piece, I wanted to balance a soft, luminous sky with a deeply grounded, tactile foreground. The heart of the painting lies in those rich, organic textures—built through layering, translucent glazes, and elements of iron to mimic the ancient patterns of weathered stone and fossilized wood.

Grounded in Neutral
Mixed media on canvas, 24" x 24"

Inspired by the transition between the ethereal and the material, "Grounded" explores the intersection of light and earth. Through the use of heavy textures, palette knife techniques, and subtle glazes, this piece invites the viewer to find stillness at the horizon line—a moment where the atmosphere meets the solid ground.

‘The Wintering Shore’
Between the ice and the horizon, there is stillness.

Art is so often about how we see the world through each other’s eyes. 🎨

This new, smaller piece—'The Wintering Shore'—was inspired by a stunning photograph captured by my lovely daughter-in-law-to-be. I was so moved by the quiet, chilly atmosphere she found at the water’s edge that I had to bring it to the canvas.

Lingering Warmth
The coral and orange tones linger in the clouds, contrasting against the encroaching, cool blues. The soft scumbled application of paint feels like radiant heat shimmering in the air. The heavy dark foreground feels like the cooling earth making the bright sky, feel even more precious and temporary.

Whispering Mist

"Whispering Mist" explores the quiet transition between the grounded earth and the ethereal atmosphere. It is a study of depth, soft light, and the stillness found in the layers of a verdant landscape.

Last Light
In this atmospheric study of the horizon, Last Light explores the boundary between the day’s final warmth and the encroaching cool of evening. The deep, impasto textures of the foreground suggest a restless sea or a darkening landscape, grounding the piece in a sense of weight and permanence.

Gilded Ash
Centered on the contrast of texture and tone, Gilded Ash utilizes heavy, volcanic impasto techniques against a luminous metallic ground. The composition is defined by sharp, aggressive fractures of black that bleed into an ethereal copper and gold horizon. By layering gritty, earth-bound materials with light-reflective pigments, the work bridges the gap between the terrestrial and the celestial.
