Our Journey Continues . . .

The past few years have been full of change whether or not it was wanted. We're gonna roll with it and see what happens. During all that time being stuck at home we gained some new skills and found some new interests that we think will allow us to offer the services that emerging artists really need.

More on that in the coming weeks.

Nevertheless, we are grateful for who Periphery Media has become and where we are today. And, more than anything else, we are beyond grateful for the people and artists we have had the pleasure of meeting and working with.

Stick with us and we’ll see where this journey takes us!

Our Journey Continues - 2021 Back-to-Back Exhibitions

As the pandemic relented, we returned to production of AIRShow, the exhibition that we canceled in 2020. At the time of our initial meeting, we were both in the midst of our own versions of recovery so an exhibition featuring work by Artists In Recovery and on that theme was something that we had been planning since 2018. The exhibition occurred at QUAID in Seminole Heights in August of 2021 and featured 26 pieces by 19 artists.

The event turned out to be everything we had imagined it would be- Art, community, tasty food, and incredible music.

Later that summer an opportunity to work with a new business in Plant City. The Tipsy Bookworm a used bookstore/craft beer taproom, was looking to hold an exhibition.

The initial idea for the exhibition, a show on the theme of information and its uses, didn't take, so in order to still make use of the space and bring art to the craft beer community, we hit the reset button and presented RESET.

We presented more than 25 pieces. Art was seen and beer was sipped.

Our Journey Continues - 2020’s Online Shift

As was the case with the entire world, the COVID-19 Pandemic caused us to change our operations. We were forced to postpone an event scheduled for June of 2020 and move most of our operations online.

Our first online exhibition, appropriately called "Social Distance", was aimed at connecting artists with audiences. Best in Show was chosen by public vote. Over 800 people voted and Lakeland artist, Brittany Ellerbe (Brittany Ellerbe’s Art) took home Best in Show.

As the Pandemic drew on, many galleries were presenting online exhibitions. We wanted to take advantage of this unique time and create an online experience like no other. So, we approached Brittany Ellerbe with a new idea for an online exhibition.

We extended Brittany's series of portraits entitled "Floral Admiration" by taking photographs of the works in various Florida locations that complemented the content and/or colors. We then presented them along with close-up shots to give the viewer a sense of the detail and texture of the pieces.

Our Journey Continues - Periphery's First Exhibitions

We got to work on our first exhibition in Plant City, Fl. Found a great venue - the Bing Rooming House and Museum - with help from some awesome friends in the PC art scene. - Plant City Bing House Black Museum

The original name of the exhibition, Crafty Bastards, was too spicy for PC, so we had to make a change. And since our goal was to "push the edge," we settled on “Periphery - An Exhibition". Sound familiar??

We wanted to create a whole event, rather than simply hang art on the walls- giving people in PC more reason to come out and celebrate unusual artwork. We presented 26 pieces by artists from all over Tampa Bay. Nearly 100 people attended the opening reception which included live music and vendors in addition to the art.

We were very pleased and excited for what would come next.

The following year, we had the amazing opportunity to work with USF Humanities Institute and The Portico. The Humanities Institute at USF wanted to include a community event to pair with a speaking engagement by Matthew Desmond, Pulitzer Prize winning author of Evicted. Our exhibition centered on the concept of home and the images and feelings that evokes.

We were honored to hold the exhibition, entitled Shelter- Concepts of Home, at The Portico Community Hall. The Portico is an organization in downtown Tampa that provides resources to Tampa's homeless community.

The exhibition featured 25 artists from across the Tampa Bay area. Another proud moment and successful show.

Our Journey Continues- The Very Beginning

Shelby was a local photographer and artist, trying to find her place in the art world. Meanwhile, Clay looked to continue the career in arts administration that he began in Washington, DC. Having returned to Plant City and seeing that there was a small but active arts community, he wanted to add to what was already being done.

Clay and Shelby happened to frequent the same coffee shop in Tampa. And after sitting across the table from one another a few times, the occasional "will you plug me in?" turned into actual conversations between Shelby and Clay and eventually a friendship.

They found common ground in their desire to make art happen- Shelby as a creator and Clay as an administrator. They also learned that they both grew up in Plant City.

While living in Washington, DC, Clay produced an independent art exhibition or two and thought doing so in Plant City might be a good way to add to the art community there. If ever there was a conceptual art exhibition in Plant City, Clay hadn't heard about it so that became the plan.

Having gotten to know Shelby over the previous weeks, Clay thought she would be into the idea but more importantly, that her talents picked up where his ended.

It turns out he was right on both points and they started making plans.

It's time for a change . . .

What started as a conversation over coffee, turned into a joint effort to assist local artists and grow the Tampa Bay art scene. Over the last four years, we’ve tried many things as a company and it's all led up to what Periphery Media is today and we’re still learning and expanding.

Clay and I like to see where life takes us and benefit from the experiences and journey.

So, who is Periphery Media today?

The answer to this question is the same as it has ever been - helping local artists by connecting them with audiences and career building opportunities.

Instead of only producing exhibitions and events, we feel led in the direction of assisting artists on a more personal level. We're re-thinking who we are, and what role we play in the local art scene. We're looking at other ways to put ourselves out there and considering what Periphery Media wants to put out into the world.
