The Riley-Carmack Museum is a two-story East Lake-style estate home built in the 1880s for George Riley, a prominent banker residing in Plattsburg and his family. His daughter, Alma married Ward Carmack who was employed at the local pharmacy. They raised their family in the home as well. Many of the artifacts belonged to the couple, and others have been donated by various members of the community

whose ancestors were founding fathers of the county. Clinton County was established in 1833, Plattsburg in 1835. There is a coat and gloves fashioned of bear hide that is on display. The bears were shot where the courthouse now stands. During one of the first winters, there were over 30 bears shot on that particular site. The first settlers were Mr. John Livingston. A Hands‑On History Lesson at Greenlawn Cemetery
May 20, 2026 — It was a remarkable day of learning, community service, and local heritage as Lesli Shaver of the Clinton County Historical Society joined Mr. Boswell’s and Mr. Baylie’s Plattsburg High School classes for a hands‑on workshop at Greenlawn Cemetery.

Students learned the proper, respectful techniques for cleaning historic headstones — and along the way, they received a living history lesson rooted in the very soil of Clinton County.

The first stop was the beloved pair Raleigh and Lina Shaver, better known across generations as Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus Shaver. Their iconic tree‑trunk stones were gently sprayed, scrubbed, and restored, revealing once again the carved “wood grain” that makes them so distinctive. It's an amazing transformation.

From there, the group moved to Leonidas Fry, the late‑1800s operator of Plattsburg’s Eaton & Fry Livery — the very site we now know as the Community Courtyard. His stone, too, received careful attention as students learned about the role the livery played in the daily life of early Plattsburg.

The cleaning continued with honoring Benjamin Franklin Metzger (1837–1928), a Civil War veteran of Company F. His headstone was cleaned with the same respect and gratitude owed to those who served.

The day concluded with a few brownie treats. Thanks to all at the Clinton County R-3 School District and our awesome students for their help. It takes a village.

What began as a cleaning workshop became a powerful reminder: every stone has a story, and every story deserves to be remembered.
