When Mayflower II arrived in Boston Harbor on the evening of Thursday, July 9, she carried more than the story of the Pilgrims’ 1620 arrival in Patuxet/Plymouth.

She carried Plimoth Patuxet Museums’ mission to new audiences—inviting visitors from around the world to discover the people, places, and stories that began here, in Plymouth.

Over five unforgettable days, more than 8,000 guests stepped aboard, transforming the national treasure into a floating classroom and an ambassador for America’s Hometown.

Last week, the Museum was honored to witness Educators and Culture Keepers on the Historic Patuxet Homesite conduct a 24-hour mishoon burn.

For the Wampanoag People, the tradition of making a mishoon—a dugout canoe crafted from a single tree through a process of controlled burning—continues as a living cultural practice. Traditionally, mishoons were burned continuously, 24 hours a day, as part of their creation.

The making of this new mishoon will culminate in a Sacred Paddle, which will serve as part of the commemoration of the 350th anniversary of the end of King Philip’s War.

We are grateful to the Educators and Culture Keepers who continue to carry, practice, and share this knowledge today.

Just over a month ago, we were honored to sail Mayflower II in Boston Harbor as part of Boston’s spectacular 2026 Parade of Sail.

It was a remarkable day filled with maritime tradition, history, and the excitement of seeing this national treasure take her place among an incredible fleet of tall ships.

Last week, Tim Turner, the Museum’s Director of Indigenous Education and Training, and members of the Historic Patuxet Homesite team, performed ongoing care and maintenance of the Historic Patuxet Homsite’s nuhshwetu, or three fire house. While the wooden frame of a wetu can last up to 10 years, the bark requires regular maintenance to keep out cold, wind, and rain. As the team worked, guests had the opportunity to see firsthand an Indigenous lifeway skill that has been passed on through generations.
