We're moving forward. Now that the exterior of the 1897 Meetinghouse is complete we have decided to go ahead with two interim projects while we complete the design of the interior build out and the restoration of the Sanctuary. The first project will be the restoration of one bay of the Sanctuary which will allow a range of cleaning and refurbishment tests that will help determine the exact approach for the overall restoration. These photographs show Lisa Howe and her talented crew from BCA beginning this process. In a month visitors to the Meetinghouse will be able to see how the completed restoration will look. So far it's stunning!
The second interim project will address the new Entry on the south side of the building and provide full accessibility with the installation of a new elevator and the construction of interior ramps.

The last task on the exterior restoration is the installation of the replica of the original 1897 entry door with historic hardware. Here Master Craftsman, Lee McColgan, is working on the details.

We have been so fortunate to have a great team on this project. Their hard work has produced a high quality restoration of a truly significant building. Lynne Spenser and Doug Manley of Spenser, Sullivan, and Vogt Architects and Chris Dabek and John Izzo of Stone and Lime Stone Restoration Services are to be applauded for the quality of their work.
One wonderful story to come out of our work together testifies to the dedication, integrity, and pride of team member, John Izzo. John is a master mason with many, many years of experience on a number of historic buildings. John is also very active in the venerated Royal Arch level of Freemasonry. We were talking one day about the rich history of Freemasonry and John described how masons still use age old marks to identify their work. I was intrigued and asked John if he wanted to put his mark on the work he's done on the Mayflower Meetinghouse and he responded enthusiastically. He said he would find a small spot high up on the rear wall of the Meetinghouse where it would not be visible. I told him that this was something very important to us and, if he agreed, it should be very visible and that it would become part of the building's history.
Here is a photo of John carving his Mason's mark next to the side entry.

About the Mayflower Meetinghouse

This building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is being restored and preserved to fulfill the General Society Mayflower Descendants education mission as a national center to tell the Mayflower story. A portion of the project cost has been funded by a vote of 2018 Plymouth Fall Town Meeting, dedicating the Community Preservation Act Funds for the restoration of the exterior of the National Memorial Pilgrim Meetinghouse.
