In 1901, the Eastman Company came out with the Kodak Brownie Camera which sold for $1! The Brownie came preloaded with film thanks to the invention of flexible celluloid film in the 1880s.

Once you had used all the film, you sent the camera back to the company who developed, printed, and reloaded your camera for you. This process cost more than buying the camera but it made so almost anybody could take photographs!

The camera was marketed to especially to women and children. Until this invention, most photographs were formal portraits. The Brownie Camera led to more laid back, candid images of people having fun.

Memorial Day offers a moment to honor and mourn U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the Armed Forces. Observed on the last Monday in May, it is a day of remembrance for the ultimate sacrifices made for the country.

Our Military Quarters display has information on various Marshall County residents who served in the Armed Forces. We are closed for Memorial but we invite you to visit soon and pay tribute to our neighbors, family, and friends who gave their lives in service to our country. Let's remember them together.
