What a beautiful day for a walking history tour. Join us today, Saturday, September 5th, at 1pm for this month's Burial Hill Tour - “Independency in the Shadow of Contagion: Smallpox in Revolutionary Plymouth”. Meet at the top of Burial Hill (Town Square).

During the Revolution, smallpox struck Plymouth (and communities throughout New England) with a force as dangerous as any military threat, forcing the town to confront difficult questions about disease, quarantine, and inoculation. This Burial Hill tour will trace the epidemic through the stories of Plymouth residents affected by smallpox and the local leaders who worked to contain it, including those who established an inoculating hospitals at Billington Sea and Saquish. Together, their experiences reveal how war and epidemic became intertwined in Revolutionary Plymouth.

Dr. Patrick Browne, Executive Director of the Plymouth Antiquarian Society, will lead us on this free 1-hour walking tour. Join the group at the very top of the Hill. Burial Hill Tours are co-presented by the Plymouth Antiquarian Society and Pilgrim Hall Museum

The Plymouth 250th Commemoration Committee, chaired by PAS Executive Director Dr. Patrick Browne, is pleased to share the Plymouth Liberty Trail, which explores the people, places, and events that made Plymouth a vital Revolutionary community.

From Plymouth Rock and the 1749 Courthouse to Patriot meeting sites, Loyalist homes, privateering stories, Burial Hill memorials, and the Black veterans’ settlement at Parting Ways, the trail reveals a town deeply divided and profoundly transformed by the struggle for American independence. Here, residents debated resistance, drilled for war, organized committees, launched warships, preserved revolutionary ideas, and carried the meaning of liberty forward.

It’s almost showtime and the cast is ready to welcome you to Revolutionary Voices: Independency with performances at 3:00pm and 7:00pm (7pm tickets available at https://plymouthantiquarian.org/events/revolutionary-voices-part-ii-independency/) tomorrow, Saturday, July 25th!

Here are some essential things to know about the performance if you are coming:

✔️Performances will be held in the 1820 Courthouse at Plymouth Town Hall, 26 Court Street
✔️Please arrive 15 minutes early to check in and be seated.
✔️Because of the layout of the historic courthouse, all audience members must be seated before the performance begins. We cannot delay the performance for late arrivals, and anyone arriving after the beginning of the performance will need to wait for an appropriate opportunity to be escorted to a seat.
✔️You may enter Town Hall through either the rear entrance or the two side entrances.
✔️The performance will run just under two hours, including a 15-minute intermission.
✔️Photography and video recording are not permitted. Please silence all electronic devices before the performance begins.
✔️Public paid parking is available nearby at the S. Russell Parking Deck, Cornish Lot, and Burton Lot. Four-hour metered spaces are available along the north and south sides of the Town Green near Court Street. Plymouth Antiquarian Society is pleased to present Revolutionary Voices, Part II: Independency. This staged dramatic reading of a full-length play in two acts, written by PAS Executive Director Dr. Patrick Browne, is produced in cooperation with the Mercy Otis Warren Society and with support from the Society of the Cincinnati.

Revolutionary Voices, Part II: Independency builds on last year’s successful short play, (📷 held in the 1749 Courthouse Museum, May 2025), but is stand-alone work and it is not necessary to have seen Part I.

This new production brings audiences into the heart of Plymouth during the American Revolution…not on the battlefield, but on the homefront, where the conflict was just as real, and often more personal. The play examines the motivations of Plymouth’s leading Patriots and Loyalists, revealing a town divided by principle, fear, and conscience.

Through vivid dialogue drawn from the historical record, the play explores how neighbors turned against one another, families were strained or broken, and the Plymouth Town Meeting was forced to make difficult, lasting decisions about how to confront Loyalist dissent. At its core, this is a story about the challenge of preserving liberty while maintaining justice.

Performances will be held at the historic 1820 Court House (Town Hall), located at 26 Court Street in Plymouth, Massachusetts, with a matinee at 3:00 pm and an evening performance at 7:00 pm, added due to popularity. Tickets are $20 per person. Performed in full period-correct costume by an experienced cast, this immersive dramatic reading unfolds across two acts (running just under two hours, with intermission).

This is history at its most human…where ideals collide, and a town must decide not only what Independency means, but how far it is willing to go to uphold it.
