On this day 31 years ago, the exhibition, “Amerikanuak! Basques in the High Desert” opened at the High Desert Museum in Bend, Oregon!
A collaboration between The High Desert Museum and the Idaho Humanities Foundation, the exhibit highlighted the stories of Basques throughout southern Idaho and Oregon and northern California and Nevada. Created with the help of Basque scholars and families who donated photos and objects, and helped locate sheep camps and aspen groves, the main exhibit was displayed at the High Desert Museum from May 1995 – April 1996. After, the exhibit traveled to the Basque Museum & Cultural Center, the Northeastern Nevada Museum (in Elko), the Fresno Metropolitan Museum, and the Nevada State Museum (in Carson City). A smaller, traveling exhibit was also created and sent to rural libraries throughout the High Desert area. This smaller exhibit is still available for viewing today through the Basque Museum’s traveling exhibit program!
