Clay Art Center presents exhibitions from our 2025-2026 Residency cohort featuring:
Rittenberg Artist-in-Residence Alvaro Villa, Second-Year Artist-in-Residence Carley Holzem, Second-Year Artist-in-Residence Christine Raposas, and Westchester Community Foundation Fellow Stephanie Perez.

Please join us for an Opening Reception on Wednesday, June 24th, 6:00-8:00 PM

We caught up in the studio with Alvaro Villa as he worked on final preparations for his solo exhibition “La House of Objects en el Orbital” about which the artist states;

“ALVARO as Ceramic Brujo welcomes viewers into La House of Objects en el Orbital to navigate a space where a kiln and a witch’s cauldron become one and a series of devotional sacred objects are meditative and ritualistic. La House of Objects en el Orbital puts forth the art and magic of the object, tool, and planning process of Alvaro’s ceramic artworks. In this exhibition Alvaro celebrates the objects, tools, sketches, and anything that helps his art making progress in a series of brick red ceramics and mixed media sculptural works. The tools that orbit the ceramic studio are made again with a magical blend of ceramic craft and subversive reimagining.”

The Opening Reception is free for the public to attend. The exhibitions will be on view at Clay Art Center Gallery June 24 - August 3, 2026.

The Community Arts team was hard at work this week arranging tiles for a stepping-stone mosaic project for Edison Elementary School in Port Chester. What makes this project so special is that we have two graduates of Port Chester schools helping to create this mosaic for another Port Chester school! Full-circle moments like this highlight the impact our programming has on the community by fostering personal and creative growth in individuals.

You can support the personal and creative growth of local youth by donating to our Scholarship and Creative Access Fund today. Find the donation link in our bio, or visit our website now.

Second Year Artist-in-Residence Christine Raposas checks the peephole on a gas firing in preparation for the upcoming Concurrent Artists-in-Residence exhibitions at Clay Art Center Gallery. Christine will present recent work in “Living A Dream, Riding A Wave”, along with Second Year Artist-in-Residence Carley Holzem, and Westchester Community Foundation Fellow Stephanie Perez. The artists state:

“Together, our work is a testament to the power of clay to evoke life in infinite shapes. At the core of this collection is the same malleable yet basic element, but from which three vastly different journeys have sprung: a mystical, fanciful corner of q***r joy; a dystopian space between the familiar and unknown; and a surrealist imagining of a rainbow under the sea. Our manifestations of texture, color, and form mark the edges of the distinct worlds we’ve forged, which share no more than the most important similarity: a common life force.“

Join us for an Opening Reception on Wednesday, June 24, from 6:00-8:00 PM. Free to the public.

Gabs Conway is a sculptural ceramic artist based in Missoula, Montana. She grew up in a creative family; sculpting and drawing alongside her father. In May of 2021, she earned her BFA, with a concentration in ceramics at the University of Wisconsin - Stout. Her educational experiences inform her personal work in many ways as she pushes the boundaries of clay; exploring relationships and community, and intrigued by familiarity in the unusual.

Anika Major is a Texas-born ceramic artist living in Seattle, Washington. She graduated from the University of North Texas, and received her BFA in ceramics and painting. Anika creates functional pottery that blends her passion for clay with figure painting. Her wheel-thrown and handbuilt pieces are characterized by their human body-inspired shapes and vivid, expressive surfaces. Anika’s narratives of romance and q***r domestic comforts are informed by her affinity for the pageantry of the rodeo, and the symbolism of the glamorous and feminine cowgirl.

Sound up! Listen to the sweet sounds of pottery cooling against the backdrop of birds singing outside. Spring is definitely in the air! A trip through the classrooms, studios, and firing facilities at Clay Art Center is always fun. We get to see pottery at many different stages from being thrown on the wheel to drying out before bisque firing, and later, coming out of the glaze firing.

Are you interested in taking a pottery class this summer? Visit our website now to learn more about the summer schedule of weekly classes of wheel throwing, sculpture, and handbuilding for students at every level. Register today and in just a few short weeks, you will be checking to see if your work is out of the kiln!

Clay Art Center is delighted to be a part of the newly completed “Greetings From Port Chester” mural located at 430 Westchester Avenue in Port Chester, New York. For almost 70 years, Clay Art Center has called Port Chester home, and we love our community!

Clay Art Center staff attended yesterday’s ribbon cutting ceremony:

L-R: Daysired DeJesus Veras (Program Assistant), Brian Barry (Community Arts & Offsite Programs Manager), and Wendy Weinstein (Development Director).

Stop by the mural and tag us in your postcard-style selfie! Our “letter P” illustration was inspired by pottery-making and some details from our public art mosaics.

Thank you to Westchester Gentle Dentistry and the Village of Port Chester for making this fun project happen!

Finding The Center: Toshiko Takaezu

Finding The Center, an exhibition of work from Clay Art Center’s historic pottery collection, captures a snapshot of the earliest days of Clay Art Center and explores the cultural currents that made founding a cooperative studio in Port Chester, New York so revolutionary. Since its founding in 1957, Clay Art Center has been a communal hub, attracting ceramic artists from across the country. Some artists stayed for years, while others have just passed through. Featured in the exhibition is work by Toshiko Takaezu who was never a member or student at Clay Art Center, but her path through clay intertwined with those of founders Katherine Choy and Henry Okamoto.

Takaezu led workshops at Clay Art Center in the 70’s and 80’s, and a handwritten letter preserved in the Clay Art Center archive tells of a friendship with Okamoto, also referencing Okamoto fixing a kiln for Takaezu “under very difficult conditions”. Learn more on this week’s edition of our Clay Dish Blog at the link in bio.

The last chance to view Finding The Center is tomorrow, Saturday, May 30 at Clay Art Center Gallery, open 10am-5pm.
