oes. This PT boat was originally intended for lend lease use to the Soviet Union in WWII, but the end of the war precluded transfer to the USSR. She is in the process of a complete restoration back to the original WWII military configuration and will be renamed the "Thom Cat" in honor of Ensign Lenny Thom. PT-728 Restoration
Ensign Thom was a Sandusky, Ohio native and served as John F. Kennedy's executive officer on board the famous PT-109. After the sinking of PT-109 and subsequent rescue of the crew, Ensign Thom was assigned a boat of his own, which the crew named "Thom Cat." It is also interesting to note that several US built Vosper designed PT boats were used in the television series "McHale's Navy." These boats were loosely reconfigured to look like 80' Elco PT boats, but the unique hull lines of the Vosper design can be clearly seen in many of the screen shots in the series. PT-728 is currently undergoing extensive restoration including keel, chines, gunwales, framing, and planking. One of the goals of the restoration is to build a safe reliable vessel that will be able to provide generations of people living history experiences of this unique part of World War II history on Lake Erie and the Great Lakes. Follow the PT-728 ThomCat page to view photos of the progress and keep up on news & announcements.

The Liberty Aviation Museum is deeply saddened to report the passing of PT 728 volunteer Ron Kolling after a short battle with cancer.
Ron worked tirelessly on the project for the past ten years bringing his many talents and skill to the project. Ron’s contributions are evident in nearly every phase of the project including the keel, gunwales, chines, bulkheads and most recently the engine stringers.
Ron’s upbeat attitude and patience made him a favorite among museum staff and fellow volunteers. His presence will be deeply missed both for his skills and friendship. His craftsmanship will live on in PT 728 for many years to come.

Today was a day away from the boat shop for an outing to Put-in-Bay. Our dedicated PT boat volunteers took a ride on the museum’s Ford Trimotor and had a nice lunch together.

A major milestone took place today as the 24’ long port and starboard outboard engine stringers were moved into Liberty Aviation Museum's WWII PT-728 Thomcat this afternoon. Thanks to careful planning and measuring the stringers fit into place without any major difficulties. The lower edge of the stringer is notched to accept the bottom frames and only very minor adjustments will need to be made for finalize the installation.
Pictured are the team that helped position the frame today, though several additional volunteers were involved in fabricating the stringers.
The stringers have been ready for some time, but the harshest January in years delayed installation.
Very proud of the work being done on PT-728 and our crew that’s bringing PT-728 closer and closer to completion.
