Log Cabin Museum

Log Cabin Museum Happy to open by appointment! The cabin was built by Allen Bartow in 1914.

The museum features changing exhibits of home life in South Kitsap during the past 100 years as well as items typically used and tells the ongoing story of the Orchards. Bartow, a Civil War veteran, newspaper man, and retired Indian agent for the Suquamish reservation, built the cabin for his wife Louise. All her life she had wished to live in a log cabin, but due to Allen's transient type of empl

oyment, had been unable to do so until his retirement. The Bartows lived in the cabin until 1922 when due to failing health, they both moved into the Washington State Veterans Home in Retsil. Their son and daughter-in-law, Henry and Edith Bartow, resided in the cabin until its sale in 1931.

Sometimes the things you need just appear, especially when you have someone who hunts them down for you. We wished for a cedar chest to hold some of the antique quilts we are preserving at the Log Cabin Museum. Patricia Sullivan (the best finder of things) reached out to Tina at Abraham's House Charity in Bremerton who had one that she donated to us. Picked up this morning it looks like it's right at home. Thank you!! Abraham's House Charity is such a treasure.

I always love this story about mailing children in the early days of the postal service. Although the builder mailing tons of bricks is interesting as well.

On January 1, 1913, the United States Post Office began offering parcel service. While private freight companies had already existed for quite some time, the program allowed many more people, including folks in rural communities, to get goods shipped to their front doors. Immediately, Americans star...

It's Black History Month. See this Kitsap History Museum story and page for great information on influential people in our area.

This Black History Month, we honor and remember Roosevelt Smith - a historian, veteran, activist, and tireless champion of Black history in Kitsap County.

Roosevelt dedicated his life to collecting, preserving, and sharing the Black experience - locally and nationally. Many knew Roosevelt through his annual Black History Month columns in the Kitsap Sun, where he shared stories, challenged assumptions, and made space for voices that deserved to be heard. Others learned through his powerful displays of Black Americana - collections he used not to shock, but to teach, to invite conversation, and to meet people where they were.

He passed away in 2023, but his work, and his spirit, continue to shape our community. We are deeply grateful for the legacy he left behind.
