I think the best part about being a painter is abstraction. Or having the choice to abstract as much or little from your work. Fish in water abstract themselves with light refraction. And observing fish doing fish things is one of the great beauties in life. What a privilege to view steelhead working towards life continuation. Two bucks flush with color fight over a dime of a hen who almost disappears in the sunlight.

Taking a stroll with my family almost always leads to some artistic notation. Some moment where life intercepts into a space that is complicated and simple. How do I translate it simply without telling the viewer too much? That’s always the challenge. To not overwork and let the viewer decide what is there.

Whilst in the midst of our winter steelhead season I was able to paint this gouache study at Battle Rock Beach. The kiddos and families played in the ocean, warmed by the fire, and I got to paint. A rare opportunity during a busy guide season. And the perfect way to spend the start of year 42.

Again testing the boundaries of my creative process. Always pushing to find what else is out there. Not anything new just a different process. Big shapes and sharp edges.

The artistic mind is fascinating to say the least. Being an artist I don’t understand it myself. What can inspire creativity comes in from all direction. Emotional inspiration. Physical inspiration. Mindfulness. A thought. A conversation.

Yesterday to the not so amusement of my wonderful partner while running errands in town we passed a scene I’ve seen hundreds of times I’m sure. This time I saw it differently. Was it the rain and haze? The lighting? Or just my state of mind in that moment? Needless to say we had to stop what we were doing so that I could capture this. Thanks Kait always for your support.
