Friends and fellow artists, an important piece by Josh Kline published in October Magazine but reviewed in many places including ARTnews. Just google it and you will find it. So many relevant insights. If you are struggling to have your work seen, supported, published, this is really worth a read. You will feel less alone. Our struggle is pervasive and real.

Our only disagreement is Kline prioritizes the challenges faced for artists born after 1975. While blue chip galleries may be maxed out with rosters full of “older artists” these artists are rarely if ever brave new faces (showing brave new work).

Thank you

“There is also a sustained focus on women’s interior worlds. Mirroring SPEEDWELL Contemporary’s commitment to women and q***r artists, the so-called feminine shapes the anthology. Hidden figures dissolve into foliage or are swallowed by the landscape. Female madness appears as a descent that carries agency rather than stigma. When Anne Sexton’s words appear, I am pulled back to my teenage years, obsessively reading her poems, underlining passages, carrying them like private scripture. Her articulation of breakdown as a form of clarity shaped me early. That intensity flickers here. The book gestures toward dancing under a full moon, but also toward acknowledging those who were pushed to the margins before us.”

An extremely special aspect of our book The Haunted lies in the last few pages. While editing the selected images, we asked each artist to write about their process— what their compulsions were for making the included work. Titled ‘Conjuring Revealed’ this section gives a glimpse into the minds and eyes of the photographers, and the intense, decisive effort that goes into making each image. Every statement is different, with the artists own logic, cadence and tone, yet all allow a decisive, lyrical illumination into these illusive pictures. The goal of the book was to make something that would last, and by fostering conversation and transparency we hope to deepen your relationship to the pages before you. Copies available through the link in bio, shipping in time for the holidays.
