End Tables - Austin Heitzman

Austin craft timeless furniture that allows wood’s natural beauty to speak for itself. Many influences converged to make that happen —from his love of nature to growing up in Southeast Asia where they were first exposed to the art of bonsai whose aesthetics carry through different pieces.

These tables are for purchase through our website and in person at our Downtown Portland showroom.

It’s all about the details.

Edna Madera - Floating Feather Hoops

Ultra-thin strands of 24-karat gold are meticulously sliced and then individually fused using a torch onto a silver base. Over hammer-formed sterling, these delicate gold threads are meticulously torch-fused and adorned with 18-karat gold hinged mechanics, all crafted by hand.

Similar to the way pencil strokes accumulate to create an image, wisps of 24-karat gold threads are delicately drawn over silver, one strand at a time, to convey a sense of lightness and weightlessness. The symbolism of the feather captures the essence of floating and defying gravity, representing an unburdening.

Materials: 24k gold, 18k gold, sterling silver

Dimensions: 22mm length x 13mm width x 22mm depth

This stunning door knocker was made by Karl Sanders in California using the lost wax casting method.

Lost wax casting, also known as investment casting, is a process used in metalworking to create a metal object from an original wax model. The process involves several steps:

1. Model Creation: An artist or sculptor creates a detailed model of the desired object using wax. This wax model is an exact replica of the final product.

2. Mold Making: The wax model is then coated with a ceramic material to create a mold. This mold is often built up in layers and allowed to harden. The mold is designed to withstand the high temperatures of the casting process.

3. Wax Removal: The mold is heated, and the wax inside melts and is removed, leaving behind a cavity in the shape of the original wax model. This is why it's called "lost wax" casting – the wax is lost during this stage.

4. Preheating: The empty mold is preheated to prepare it for the molten metal.

5. Casting: Molten metal, usually bronze or another alloy, is poured into the mold. The metal fills the cavity left by the melted wax, taking the shape of the original model.

6. Cooling and Solidification: The filled mold is allowed to cool and the metal solidifies, adopting the shape of the original wax model.

7. Breaking the Mold: Once the metal has fully solidified, the ceramic mold is broken or removed, revealing the final metal casting.

8. Finishing: The cast metal object may undergo additional processes such as polishing, grinding, or other finishing techniques to achieve the desired appearance.

Lost wax casting is often used for creating intricate and detailed metal sculptures, jewelry, and other decorative or functional objects. It allows for a high level of precision and detail in the final product.
