Oregon Music Hall of Fame

Oregon Music Hall of Fame The OMHOF is a non-profit organization created to help preserve Oregon's unique musical heritage and actively promote musical education in Oregon schools.

In the 1990’s, an organization called the Oregon Music Coalition was formed, electing an Oregon Music Hall of Fame consisting of approximately 50 Oregon bands and individual musicians. Over the years, the Oregon Music Coalition lost steam and eventually disbanded. In 2003, a group of people, Terry Currier, Janeen Rundle, Ford Pearson, Buck Munger, E Helz, and Kevin Anspauch,
dedicated to the musi

c scene in Oregon became committed to revitalizing the slumbering Oregon Music Hall of Fame, forming a non-profit corporation using the Oregon Music Hall of Fame moniker. OMHOF will continue to recognize all the former artist inductees and, once a year, will elect new inductees into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame based on several criteria including their contributions to music in Oregon as well as their impact on music around the world. Nominees will include musicians, producers, radio disc jockeys, promoters, and others. Our long-term goal is to have an actual Oregon Music Hall of Fame building that will house displays of memorabilia and music exhibits, as well as host music education seminars. A Board of Directors, containing a dynamic mix of musicians, artists, marketing experts, business people, and music industry insiders, guides OMHOF. This volunteer board has given a great deal of their time to re-launch OMHOF, and they continue to push the organization into new directions, past the original guidelines of the Oregon Music Coalition. While honoring Oregon’s musical heritage is an important aspect of OMHOF, we are also interested in developing Oregon’s talent of today and tomorrow. OMHOF introduces Oregon audiences to the State’s hottest new bands and solo acts by hosting periodic Emerging Artist Showcases. These showcases will encompass all musical genres, from rock, blues, and country, to jazz, classical, and folk. Our first Emerging Artist Showcase was held at the Crystal Ballroom on Friday, March 18, 2005. This concert featured Justin Hopkins, Scott Fisher, and Dr. Theopolis, and it was attended by almost 500 people. Tickets to these showcases are inexpensive (under $10) yet they offer hours of musical entertainment featuring several different acts. They are the perfect venue to present Oregon’s up-and-coming musical acts to a broader audience. OMHOF will also take an active part in promoting musical education in Oregon schools. We will offer scholarship money to selected Oregon high school seniors who are continuing their musical studies in college. We will also do our part to raise money in order to help Oregon grade and
middle schools continue their music programs which are, sadly, being slowly discontinued due to budget cuts. All of these important goals will be funded by OMHOF dues, fundraisers, grants, donations, our Emerging Artist Showcases, and various OMHOF promoted concerts. You can get on the bandwagon and make a sound investment for Oregon. You can join OMHOF for only $30.00. Sign up as a volunteer and help us keep Oregon music alive.

It is with immense sadness that I share that my husband, Stephen, passed away early this morning after a long struggle with heart failure.
Stephen was many things to many people, but first and foremost he was a musician and a beloved presence in the Portland music community for more than 45 years. He played with several bands over the years, most notably Ed and the Boats, and then Jesus Presley, where he performed on and off for nearly two decades.
Beyond performing, Stephen championed music and musicians. Through the local publication Two Louies, he reviewed hundreds of shows and recordings from local, regional, and national artists, always eager to give bands—especially new and struggling ones—attention and encouragement. He loved music, and he loved the people who made it.
Stephen was also an author, having written a semi-fictional account of the life of local musician Billy Rancher, and he was a published poet. But what people will remember most is not just his work—it was his heart.
He was one of those rare people who showed up for others. If someone needed help, he found a way to help. He supported friends, strangers, artists, and causes he believed in. He loved animals—especially dogs and elephants—and animals loved him right back. He believed deeply in kindness, fairness, and community, and he never stopped caring about the world or the people in it.
To me, he was the best thing that ever happened. He was my partner, my companion, my champion, and my home.
Stephen is survived by me, his wife, his sister Janice, and several nieces and nephews, along with a very large circle of friends and fellow musicians who will feel his absence deeply.
He was truly one of a kind, and he will be missed by more people than he ever realized.
I will share information about further plans for a celebration when they are known. For now, please keep Stephen in your thoughts, and if you have memories or stories of him, I would love to hear them.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OREGON MUSIC HALL OF FAME ANNOUNCES 2026 COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The Oregon Music Hall of Fame (OMHOF) is pleased to announce that applications are now open for its 2026 College Scholarship Program, which supports Oregon high school seniors pursuing higher education in music and music-related fields. The application deadline is February 25, 2026. The application is available at:

https://www.omhof.org/music-education-scholarships/

Each year, OMHOF awards scholarships to graduating Oregon high school seniors who have demonstrated a serious commitment to musical study and performance and who plan to continue their education at a college or university. Applicants must be Oregon residents and intend to major or minor in music, or pursue a career in the music industry, beginning in the fall of 2026. Through this program, OMHOF seeks to inspire the continued pursuit of higher musical education and help ease the financial burden of college expenses for promising young musicians.

In 2025, the Oregon Music Hall of Fame awarded seven scholarships of $2,500 each to outstanding student musicians from across the state. Recipients included Luke D’Silva of Westview High School in Portland, a violist who auditioned for the Cleveland Institute of Music, New England Conservatory, and The Juilliard School;

O’Brien of Glencoe High School in Hillsboro, a marimba and piano student who enrolled at the University of Oregon; Samuel Hardy of Crescent Valley High School in Corvallis, a clarinet and saxophone student bound for either the University of Oregon or Willamette University; Bastion Sorenson, also of Crescent Valley High School, a French horn player and baritone vocalist attending Oregon State University; and Emmet Murch of Philomath High School, a pianist and violinist considering the University of Oregon or Oregon State University.

The 2025 Women in Music Scholarship was awarded to Alexa Cornejo of Willamette High School in Eugene, a double bass jazz musician and vocalist who plans to study at either the University of Oregon or Portland State University. The Music Teacher Scholarship was awarded to William Boldon of Grants Pass High School, a cellist and trombonist continuing his studies at either the University of Oregon or the University of Colorado Boulder. Each scholarship recipient was publicly recognized at an OMHOF award presentation and performed onstage, demonstrating mastery of their instrument and dedication to their craft.

For 2026, OMHOF will again offer multiple scholarship opportunities through a single application process, this year upping each award from $2500 to $3500. In addition to its general college scholarships, OMHOF offers the Women in Music Scholarship, established in memory of Gloria Johnson, which supports female students pursuing degrees in broadcasting, communications and public relations, music therapy, music technology, music business, music theory, and music production. A special opportunity is also available through the Billy Hagen Memorial Scholarship, supported by a grant from UMT Productions. This scholarship honors Billy Hagen’s formative years in the Beaverton-area music community and provides $3,500 per year for both 2026 and 2027 to graduating seniors from Aloha, Beaverton, or Sunset High School who demonstrate exceptional creativity, musicianship, and commitment to music or music-related careers.

Applications for the 2026 Oregon Music Hall of Fame College Scholarship Program are available online, and only one application will be accepted per student for all scholarship opportunities. The deadline to apply is February 25, 2026. Complete details and application materials can be found at www.omhof.org/music-education-scholarships.

Founded as a nonprofit organization in 2004, the Oregon Music Hall of Fame is dedicated to preserving Oregon’s unique musical heritage while recognizing the achievements of exceptional musicians, promoting emerging artists, and enriching music education across the state. Through scholarships, educational initiatives, and community-based music events, OMHOF continues to support the musicians of today and inspire the musicians of tomorrow.
