Many of Rickert's rock formation paintings are named for and depict well-known rock climbing sites/routes, where more often than not, her husband Jon is climbing nearby as she paints. Scroll to the second image for the proof!

Tune in tomorrow for the next Reel in our "Close Range Questions' series to hear the full story behind these three Joshua Tree paintings from herself.

Opens today! Albert Kresch: A Centennial.

"I’m most interested in propelling the color and the space – catapulting it off the surface... I do like to get space by means of color. Speaking of color, I like frank, cold and warm colors. I think that the color should have weight to it, should have a pressure. It isn’t the tint or the hue that counts so much, it’s that pressure… You say, what’s this color against that? Because of value contrast, I can use practically any color in a landscape or a still life if I get the value right. If I get the tonality and the contrast right, then I can invent the color – let's say it’s green against blue. I could make one somewhat orange-ish and the other somewhat purple-ish, but I have to get the right value of purple and of orange." - Albert Kresch, 2005, from an interview in

Come see these dreamy colors in person - we’ll be there 12:30 until 6.

Oenophiles, ostreaphiles, and art lovers!

It’s our first summer open here at Alice Gauvin Gallery! To celebrate, we’ve partnered with Portland’s own Devenish Wines and the folks behind Shuck Station in Newcastle to bring you an evening of bubbles and brine.

Local wine pro Tim Woods of Devenish has curated a summery quartet of natural, small production sparkling wines, from raw, off-the-beaten path pet nats to classic biodynamic grower Champagne and rustic Italian fizz. He’ll guide you through grower-produced bubbles of all shapes, sizes, colors, and textures. Meanwhile, Brendan Parsons, the owner of Shuck Station and Blackstone Point Oyster Farm, will be offering a selection of four varieties of oyster (three farmed and one wild) to accompany this expansive palate (and palette!) of bubbles.

Come toast the start of summer with us, and while you’re here, enjoy two distinctive exhibitions of paintings from two American masters, Lennart Anderson (1928 – 2015) and Albert Kresch (1922 – 2022).

Follow the link in our bio for tickets ➡️ cheers Portland! 🥂

Happy Memorial Day weekend! Here’s Lennart Anderson in Maine in 1982. Seasonally relevant archival photo of provided by

Anderson’s strong connection to Maine persisted throughout his life: he was faculty artist at the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture in 1965 and 1967; he maintained a close friendship with several individuals quintessential to the Maine art world, most notably ; and in 1981 bought a cottage of his own on Middle Bay in Brunswick (where this photo was taken) where he spent his summers painting until his death in 2015.

We're in the Press Herald! Thank you and for another wonderful and engaging review of our show (link in bio).

"Primarily a gestural painter, [Ying Li] brings that gesturalism to her drawings. But Li also studied calligraphy in her native China, and it is apparent that she reveres the animating potential of line. Her charcoal portraits buzz with life. But what is most interesting is that the figures themselves seem to be outwardly placid, creating a fascinating tension." - Jorge Arango

We’re now selling "Lennart Anderson: A Retrospective," both in the gallery and on our website, as part of our lovely new (open-ended) exhibition of Lennart Anderson's Maine landscapes!

This is the most comprehensive publication to date on the painter Lennart Anderson (1928-2015). Anderson was described by the New York Times as one of the “most prominent and admired painters to translate figurative art into a modern idiom.” John Yau calls Anderson a “masterful colorist whose sensitivity to tonality and to tonal groupings is unrivaled,” and Hilton Kramer succinctly wrote that Anderson was a “Degas of our time.” This illustrated and scholarly publication pairs more than fifty full color reproductions of work, some never seen before, with essays by leading contemporary painters and art historians.

Get your copy of this beautiful catalogue before they're gone!
