It’s that time of year again! Strawbery Banke is welcoming lots of young historians to the Museum to learn about life at Puddle Dock. Whether it’s being a history detective at the Walsh House, learning about local Black history at the Penhallow-Cousins House, or baking cookies in a hearth cooking workshop, field trip students are immersed in New Hampshire history.

This goes out to Georgia-Pacific, a longtime supporter of Strawbery Banke Museum’s History Within Reach program. Their generous support helps provide financial assistance to more than 2,000 students each year, making it possible for young learners to take part in the Museum’s K–12 school programs and vacation camps. Georgia-Pacific’s commitment to lifelong learning and stronger communities helps open doors for students of all ages, and we are grateful for their continued investment in educational access at Strawbery Banke.

Memorial Day was first held in honor of those who died during the American Civil War. Widely known as Decoration Day, mourners honored their dead by decorating graves with flowers and wreaths. One central place in Portsmouth for Decoration Day gatherings was Goodwin Park, dedicated in 1888 to Ichabod Goodwin, New Hampshire’s governor during the Civil War. The park is home to the Civil War Sailors and Soldiers Memorial Statue, which became part of the city’s earliest Memorial Day celebrations.

The Museum is open today from 10 AM to 4 PM. We invite you to visit and reflect on the stories, places, and people that continue to shape our community.

Join Strawbery Banke and Portsmouth Historical Society later this month to "Discover Yankee Doodle." In this lecture, Dr. Philip Mead explores the American Revolution through Joseph Plum Martin, an enlisted soldier whose writings reveal the lived experiences of ordinary Continental Army soldiers. Learn more and register via StrawberyBanke.org/tickets

As we prepare to open the John Paul Jones House and the "Revolutionary Portsmouth" exhibition, we are also excited to kick off our lecture series with Strawbery Banke Museum.

Dr. Phil Mead will be speaking on Friday, May 29, at 6pm on the material world of a Revolutionary War soldier. Using the writings and material belongings of a young soldier, Joseph Plumb Martin (only 16 at the time of enlistment), Mead is able to recreate a vivid firsthand account covering seven years in the Continental Army.
