For the last several months I have been analyzing dozens of sites: museum, gallery, exhibition centers, entertaining media and education organizations. I have been choosing best representatives in the area, like Rolling Stone http://www.rollingstone.com/ , and The Metropolitan Museum of Art http://www.metmuseum.org/ . I would like to share my observations and concerns.

To my great disappointment I didn’t find “The Perfect Site” ;-)

My selected parameters for evaluating those sites are the following: cross-browser and cross-platform adaptability (site can be correctly viewed on different devices, and through different browsers); applied technologies success (through programming and coding); design modernity and usability (it’s up to date and easy to use).

Here some interesting numbers:
1. 32% of the sites have something that doesn’t work even on the most popular browsers, and even on the desk top computer;
2. 100% of the sites have something that just doesn’t work in general (glitches, “falls off”) – as the site is not getting serviced, or the service company is not competent;
3. 85% of the sites have an old design, mistakes in logic, navigation, and usability.

Why is that happening? Is there a way to change this situation? I am going to develop this topic in upcoming posts.

Last week we finished working on the navigation system for the site. The prototype is ready, and it reflects our educational concept:

The base of the site is in chronologic order of the events. Chronological sequence of presentation gives us an ability to have a clear structure, provoke reader’s interest in the following events, and connect the relationships between the events of the past and present.

Three levels of difficulty of the content give us the ability to gradually increase the depth in desired subject. That would also differentiate the perception of the same events: a reader will have a chance to evaluate the event from the perspective of its historical place, historical value, and historical result.
