From sketch to finished masterpiece, this is where the magic happens.

These two pieces offer a rare glimpse into George Phippen’s creative process. Beginning with a detailed pencil sketch, Phippen would map out movement, composition, and storytelling before bringing the scene to life in oil. The finished painting captures a mule train winding through rugged terrain, full of depth, motion, and the spirit of the Western frontier.

As a founding member of the Cowboy Artists of America, Phippen was known for his authenticity and firsthand experience of Western life, something clearly seen in both the planning and the final work.

Come see how a vision evolves from paper to canvas at the Phippen Museum.
