Experience Native American art, culture, and tradition at the Prescott Indian Art Market (PIAM), happening September 19–20, 2026, at Sharlot Hall Museum. Join us Saturday from 9 AM–5 PM and Sunday from 9 AM–4 PM for a weekend featuring more than 80 exceptional Native artists, Indigenous art, music, performances, demonstrations, and more.

Explore handmade pottery, beadwork, oil paintings, weaving, and other beautiful works, and meet the artists behind them. Our 2026 featured artist is Delmar Polacca, a talented Hopi pottery maker whose work reflects the artistry and traditions celebrated at PIAM.

All artwork follows guidelines established by the Indian Arts and Crafts Act of 1990, ensuring that pieces are authentically Native American made and, for PIAM, handmade. A jury made up of representatives from several tribes serves as an advisory council in the planning and ex*****on of the market, helping uphold the integrity and quality of this special event.

Experience Arizona frontier history firsthand during Living History Day at the Ft. Whipple Museum tomorrow, Saturday, September 5, 2026, from 10 AM to 3 PM.

Living History interpreters dressed in accurate period attire will bring the history of Ft. Whipple to life through demonstrations and discussions of military and medical artifacts from the fort’s operational years.

Explore the tools, equipment, and everyday items used by soldiers stationed on the Arizona frontier, including demonstrations featuring medical instruments, fi****ms, and other artifacts from a typical trooper’s kit.

Living History at the Ft. Whipple Museum takes place on the first Saturday of each month, April through November, and is free to the public.

The Ft. Whipple Museum is open Fridays and Saturdays, 10 AM–4 PM.

For this week’s Day’s Past, discover the fascinating story of how a New Mexican land grant eventually became the historic O RO Ranch in Yavapai County.

How does a 500,000-acre land grant in New Mexico eventually lead to a historic ranch northwest of Prescott? The answer involves disputed land claims, colorful characters, a lack of water, and a determined effort to make a ranch thrive in some of Arizona’s roughest terrain.

The story begins with the Cabeza de Baca family and a massive land grant originally claimed in New Mexico. After the United States acquired much of the Southwest following the Mexican-American War, the family’s land claims were recognized—but they were given an unusual solution: five 100,000-acre “floats” that could be selected elsewhere in the Southwest.

Float Number Five landed northwest of Prescott.

For years, ranchers struggled to make the dry land profitable. Without permanent sources of water, raising cattle proved difficult. Eventually, the Greene’s Cananea Cattle Company combined the Baca Float with the adjoining Mahon Ranch and tackled the water problem by creating deep catch tanks capable of holding water year-round.

The result was the massive O RO Ranch.

The Prescott Indian Art Market Is Back!

There are art shows. There are festivals. There are museum events. And then there are those rare gatherings that, after nearly three decades, have become something closer to a family reunion.

Join us at Sharlot Hall Museum for the 28th Annual Prescott Indian Art Market, September 19–20, for a weekend celebrating Indigenous art, culture, heritage, and the artists who keep traditions alive.

With approximately 80 juried artists participating, visitors can explore an incredible variety of pottery, weaving, basketry, jewelry, painting, photography, sculpture, carving, beadwork, textiles, sand painting, and more. Watch artists demonstrate their crafts, meet the people behind the artwork, and discover the stories and traditions carried through generations.

This year's featured artist is Hopi potter Delmar Polacca, who will be sharing a table with his son, Matthew—a wonderful example of artistic traditions being passed from one generation to the next while still allowing each artist to develop their own creative voice.

The market is more than a place to purchase beautiful artwork. It is an opportunity to connect with artists, learn about Indigenous cultures and traditions, support working artists, and experience living history.

Step back in time and experience history in action at the Ft. Whipple Museum!

Join us on Saturday, September 5, 2026, from 10 AM to 3 PM for our next Living History Day. Interpreters dressed in accurate period attire will discuss and demonstrate the use of military and medical artifacts from the time when Ft. Whipple was in operation.

See demonstrations featuring medical tools, fi****ms, and other items commonly found in the kit of a typical trooper stationed on the Arizona frontier.

Living History at Ft. Whipple Museum takes place on the first Saturday of each month, April through November.

Admission to the Ft. Whipple Museum is free to the public, including during Living History Days.
