The Heritage Center was invited to J.E.J. Moore Middle School’s Memorial Day Tribute and, as always, the event was well done and very moving.

The J.E.J. Moore band played the National Anthem; Full Year Choir and PAAS students performed “Song of the Unsung Hero”; and young writers read their original poetry. Other students read the names of Prince George’s fallen soldiers while the Honor Guard placed flags in the school’s Memorial Garden. Speaker Eric Johnson’s message to students was inspirational and recipients of the Capt. Jessie Ozbat "Honor Above All" Scholarship spoke with much gratitude to the Ozbat family and John Randolph Foundation. Thank you to the administration, teachers and parents who made this day very meaningful for students and attendees.

More copies of “The Greatest Sentence Ever Written” by Walter Issacson have just arrived ! In this book, the second sentence of the Declaration of Independence - “We hold these truths …” - is succinctly examined word by word. You will learn how it was written to “inspire unity, equality and the enduring promise of America.”

A local reader who received the book as a present said, “It might be the most significant birthday gift I’ve ever received.”

As we approach the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the short (69 pages), straightforward exploration into the words that made a nation is a great read.

The Heritage Center shop is open Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 804.863.0212 for information.

Our friends at the Appomattox Regional Library System invite you to “The Dancing Greek” on Saturday, April 11, at 2 p.m. (Hopewell Library). Assistant Librarian Jeanie Langford tells the remarkable story of Canadian millionaire Costas Affentakas and his search for a long-lost ancestor. Partnering with Jeanie, he uncovers his roots in Hopewell, Virginia. It’s an inspiring story of genealogy, connection, and local history that will resonate with everyone.
