The Princeville Grade School 5th grade visited the museum last week. In the classroom, they are studying the Civil War and the Underground Railroad.

During their visit to the museum, the 5th graders were introduced to:
-The Cutter home in Princeville which was part of the Underground Railroad
-Letters from William and Samuel Coburn who were a father and son from Princeville who enlisted in Battery A from Peoria.
-Civil War artifacts on display in the military section
-Farm and home equipment in buildings 1 and 2 that were used during the 1860s. Surprisingly, none of the students wanted to boil water to hand scrub clothing to wash and wring out in the wood tub washing machine, they prefer just pushing a button to start the machine and walk away until it is done.

What a great way to honor our veterans. Volunteer to help mark the graves of veterans at the Princeville Township Cemetery next week.

The Princeville Township Board of Trustees is requesting help from our community. On Wednesday, May 20th at 6:00 p.m. we will be meeting at the Princeville Township Cemetery to place flags on all the graves of the Veterans that are buried. We have 400 Veterans buried in our cemetery and it is an honor to do this for them and their families every year. We need all the help we can get! Please join us for this important annual event. Many hands make light work.

Quiz time: In 1942, what did the Princeville Schools do to assist the war effort?

A. Donate library books to paper scrap drive
B. Turn off the heat to conserve fuel
C. Serve ham & beans daily to conserve food
D. 6-day school week to end semester early

Hearing about a 6-day school week was one thing Mr. Williams’ history classes at PHS learned when they visited last week. In the classroom, they are studying WWII and visited the museum to hear about local WWII veterans, read articles from the Princeville Telephone newspaper, view scrapbooks and tour the buildings. It was an enriching experience for all.

Quiz answer: D, the Princeville School Board voted to have a 6-day school week in 1942. School was done the first week of May allowing the students to help get the crops planted and work at the canning company helping with the asparagus pack.
