Working from her Provincetown studio, Jenny Humphreys begins with imagined worlds that gradually shift through intuitive and unexpected additions. Playful, surreal, and sometimes disorienting elements emerge through the act of painting itself, creating works that resist fixed interpretation. A crocodile eating flowers, a squid nestled on a pink face, a frog gazing on a queens disembodied head- these images feel allegorical and mythical. Jenny is a graduate of Yale and Indiana University and has been living and painting in Provincetown since she arrived in the early 90’s for a residency at The Fine Arts Work Center. Come see more of Jenny’s paintings. We are open Fridays & Saturdays 11 - 9, Sundays & Mondays at 11 - 5. We are always available by appointment.

Helen Grimm just dropped off one of her newest paintings to help us usher in Four Eleven‘s Sweet 16 Birthday. Where does the time go? Helen has been with Four Eleven since day one - when she gently knocked on the door and asked if I might be looking for artists. I’ll never forget it. What a Sweet 16 years it has been; sharing the journey with Helen and so many wonderful artists, collectors and friends along the way. Countless good people and moments and memories. I am very, very grateful.

Welcome Season 16!! This Friday night of we kick-off with Jay McDermott and Jenny Humphreys’ summer show. Both artists explore topsy turvy worlds of surreal surprises. I also love their shared use of bold color and dynamic composition. There are many intersections that inspired me to pair Jay and Jenny in this two person show and I hope you’ll see them too. For the show’s title I’ve chosen “UnFixed Forms” - a term borrowed from poetry - implying a shift in structure and rules. I hope you can stop by this Friday night May 22nd from 6 - 9pm for the first official gallery stroll of the season and take in these two, local, Provincetown painters’ works in conversation with each other.
Summer 2026 - let’s go!!
Thanks for the love,
Liz Carney

This Friday Night it’s going to get surreal! May 22nd, 6-9pm is the first official Friday night Art Stroll of the 2026 season. We’re thrilled to present new works by Jenny Humphreys and Jay McDermott. Jenny has been with the gallery for several years and Jay is a newer face at Four Eleven. Both are local Provincetown painters. Both artists explore wild imagery, welling from the unconscious. Both demonstrate a love of color and complex compositions. So excited to see them paired and find unexpected delights in their juxtaposition.

This is the last weekend to see Lizzie Abelson’s gorgeous show of works she made while in Provincetown. Lizzie makes two bodies of work - one in nature from direct observation and the other from memory and looking at her sketches and plein aire paintings. Each style informs the other and they’re Integrated beautifully. Here is a sampling of 6 of the 21 she painted while in Provincetown. Come see! The gallery is full of color and light on this perfect spring day. We are open today until 7 PM and tomorrow from 11 AM to 5 PM. We are also open by appointment and works are always available online.

This new piece by Provincetown artist Julie Smith, “We Thought We Understood,” offers a respite for the senses. There is a soft gaze in this painting that gently pulls our attention to the present. The dark center of that creamy calla lily, the rich jewel tones throughout the leaves, the shift of light on the stems in water - each facet of this painting feels perfectly placed.
