- He Hath Borne Our Griefs, and Carried Our Sorrows

Peter Meyer’s 'He Was Cut Off from the Land of the Living' visually echoes the isolation, suffering, and exclusion recorded in Isaiah 53. The title, drawn directly from the words of Isaiah, frames the artwork as a contemplative entry point into Christ’s moments of solitude as He was making an ultimate sacrifice.

Meyer’s artwork invites viewers to pause, reflect, and engage with the emotional and spiritual weight of Isaiah 53; weight emphasized by the heaviness in Christ’s body, emphasized as viewers’ follow a beam of light down to His arms outstretched on the cross and the crown of thorns atop His head. The composition of this image reminds viewers of what Christ did for every one of God’s children. He allowed Himself to be alienated from society and crucified so that all humanity can be redeemed and live again.

Lithographs like this one are made from a printmaking process—one that involves drawing a design directly onto a stone, etching over the design, and applying chemicals to bond the drawing to the stone itself. After applying ink with a roller, the resulting image is transferred onto paper. Much like the process of lithography requires a chemical reaction to be completed, Jesus Christ took our sins upon Himself to “deliver us from evil” (Luke 2:4).

'Gilded Paradise' has been extended through October 27!

8 months ago, we unveiled a newly discovered, restored, and gilded cast of the Gates of Paradise. While the Gates themselves are now a permanent part of the MOA experience, this exhibition - which reveals the thrilling tale of finding them in Hawaii, painstakingly restoring each panel, and building a display that would show them in all their glory - closes in just over 2 weeks.

We invite you to stand in awe before the golden Gates of Paradise. Meet Lorenzo Ghiberti, the sculptor who helped usher in the Renaissance. See exactly how the heroes and heroines of the Old Testament were brought to life in high relief. Hear from key figures who made the exhibition possible, and marvel at works so iconic that Michelangelo himself said that they was "worthy to be the Gates of Paradise".

On October 21 and 22, we're delighted to host 3 special events with Kirk Sharp, Executive Director of the Gordon Parks Museum.

October 21 at 5 PM, will screen 'The Learning Tree', a feature film directed by Parks, in room 250 of the Kimball Tower. Sharp will introduce the movie with a brief presentation.

October 22 at 11 AM, Sharp will lead a tour of the exhibition 'Homeward to the Prairie I Come', featuring Parks' iconic career of photographs.

October 22 at 7 PM, Sharp will lead a lecture in the auditorium and announce the winners of the MOA's first ever Photography Competition. Refreshments will be served!

All three events are FREE and OPEN TO ALL. We can't wait to see you there!

- Comfort Ye My People

The first word of Isaiah chapter 40 is “Comfort”; as Isaiah shares this message from God to the people of Jerusalem, he emulates Jesus Christ’s promise of divine love and reassurance. Painted by Daniel Ridgway Knight, this pastoral scene, "Premier Chagrin" (“First Grief”), depicts two young women comforting and ministering to each other in this moment of quiet mourning. Although the reason for their grief is unknown, their experience remains universal: all “stand in need of comfort” (Mosiah 18:9).

Through Jesus Christ, all of God’s children can be healed, restored, forgiven, and comforted. And as we represent Jesus Christ by loving and comforting others in times of hardship, we help others feel His love.

Gordon Parks called the camera his "weapon of choice". What did that mean to him?

This Wednesday at 12:10 PM, Curator Isaac King will lead a Gallery Talk through the exhibition and share the many ways Parks used his camera as a weapon. The event is free and all are invited to join us.
