Last Tuesday, eleven PAHS members went on a fieldtrip to the Vermejo Park Ranch west of Raton, NM. We visited the large charcoal ovens and saw the Catskill townsite. It was a beautiful, chilly fall day - perfect for viewing these amazing structures.

Join us online to learn more about the future of Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site.

The National Park Service will host a virtual public meeting on Tuesday, October 6, at 5:30 p.m. MDT as part of the ongoing public comment period on the future of the reconstructed fort.

During the meeting, NPS staff will present information about the history and current condition of the reconstructed fort and walk through the four concept alternatives now available for public review. Participants will also have an opportunity to ask questions following the presentation.

Pahsey, PAHS little ambassador pony, got to go on another site visit with the South Park Site Stewards yesterday. The day started out cold and foggy, but it cleared up and ended up being a perfect day for a site visit. Pahsey learned how to record new artifacts that were found - THREE! projectile points and an old bison horn! Thanks to the site stewards team - Barb, Doug, Cindy and Mitch for making it such a great visit!

The Adventures of Pahsey continue! Pahsey, PAHS own little ambassador pony, got to go on an expedition in Fremont county wandering up Mill Gulch. She and her buddy Britta checked out an old mine (being cautious to not go inside). The rocks around the mine look to have epidote, garnet, and quartz (but PAHS member Larry, would have to confirm that!). It was apparently an iron mine. Next, Pahsey got to see an original "tiny home" that hasn't been in use for a very long time. Then it was back to the picnic table for a little break.

🏛️ Have a voice in the future of one of Colorado’s Most Endangered Places!

Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site, placed on Colorado’s Most Endangered Places in 2026, is entering an important planning process, and the National Park Service wants to hear from you.

The National Park Service has begun a concept study to explore options for the future of Bent’s Old Fort and the visitor experience. Public input is an important part of that process.

CPI encourages community members, visitors, partners, and anyone connected to this nationally significant place to learn more and share their thoughts.

A special thank you to Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site and Visit La Junta for hosting a public work session yesterday, giving the community an opportunity to learn more about the planning process, ask questions, and hear how to participate.
