A MESSSAGE FROM THE ASPINOCK HISTORICAL SOCIETY: PUTNAM: The Aspinock Historical Society of Putnam held its Annual Membership Meeting on Tuesday, May 12, at the Putnam Municipal Complex, drawing nearly 100 members and guests for an evening of history, reflection, and community engagement.
The meeting included a comprehensive review of the Society’s activities and accomplishments over the past year, providing attendees with an update on ongoing preservation efforts and future initiatives.
A highlight of the evening was a featured presentation by Claire Laporte, a former employee of the Belding-Heminway-Corticelli mill. Laporte delivered an in-depth look at the company’s extensive manufacturing operations across the country, with particular emphasis on its historic Putnam location. Her presentation included a rich collection of visual materials that illustrated the mill’s impact on the region.
Laporte also shared a personal and powerful account of a payroll heist she experienced during her time at the mill, recalling the moment she was threatened at gunpoint—an event that underscored the human stories behind Putnam’s industrial past.
Following the presentation, refreshments were served, and attendees had the opportunity to purchase the book
“Perspectives of Putnam” by Margaret Weaver highlighting the history of Putnam.
The Aspinock Historical Society continues its mission of preserving and promoting the rich heritage of Putnam and the surrounding region through educational programs, events, and community outreach.
