Tommy Vandevelde

Tommy Vandevelde is a local self-taught artist, word carver, and diorama maker. At an early age, his love of nature, scenery, and animals became the subjects of his sketching.

An Army veteran, traveling to the Black Forest in Germany, became his inspiration for wood carving. He restored a full-sized 1904 German carousel horse and began carving a variety of smaller horses, as well as birds, fish, and mermaids.

From oil painting to acrylics, his style includes realistic nature, western scenes, classic cars, underwater sea life, and trains. His mixed-media canvases include found and repurposed objects with carved, handmade frames. His commissioned pieces have included numerous personal paintings.

The fourth art piece is called “Hebgen Brown Gulper” by Rick True. This is a huge piece. It is a 10 feet long fish made of aluminum, steel, automotive bearings, and auto vinyl. It is on a 10 ft. pole and will spin in the wind. People can go view it in the planter over by the Library.
