The adventures continue!

Thank you to the 2nd graders from Brouillet Elementary for visiting the museum for our Global Passport: Cultures Through Artifacts Field Trip—our second to last trip of the school year! 🎉

From exploring artifacts to asking thoughtful questions, students brought so much curiosity and enthusiasm to their visit. It’s been a fantastic year of global learning, and this group kept that energy going strong right to the finish line!

One more field trip to go…

Artifact of the Week: June 1 – 5

Bathing Costume

This is a bathing costume dating from 1910. Crafted from wool, it consists of a short-sleeved tunic paired with full bloomers that extend to the knee. While this style appears conservative by contemporary standards, it was a big departure from the heavy, restrictive dresses, stockings, and shoes that defined the beach attire of the previous century. It was donated to Karshner Museum in 1987.

A week of global learning!

Thank you to the Sunrise Elementary 3rd graders for visiting the museum this week for our Global Passports: Cultures Through Artifacts field trip.

Students explored cultures from around the world, engaged with artifacts, and made thoughtful connections as they learned about global traditions and everyday life. It was a great week of curiosity, discovery, and hands on learning.

The students help bring history at the Karshner Museum come alive!

Throwback Thursday

Did you know Paul H. Karshner Elementary was named in honor of Paul H. Karshner, the son of Dr. Warren and Ella Karshner, for whom the Karshner Museum is also named?

Dr. Karshner was not only a doctor, researcher, and senator—he was also a teacher at Spinning Elementary in 1899. His legacy of learning and community connection continues to this day.

Artifact of the Week: May 25 – 29

Yam Hoe

This yam hoe is a vital agricultural tool from Nigeria, where the yam is a staple crop and a powerful symbol of wealth and prosperity. The hoe's design, with a sturdy wooden handle and a heavy iron blade, is specifically crafted for the labor-intensive process of creating soil mounds necessary for cultivating yams.

Throwback Thursday

Ever wonder how the Puyallup School District came to have a museum? Take a look back at this Puyallup Schools Report from February 1981.

Dr. Karshner and his wife, Ella, were truly ahead of their time in their vision for student learning.

In 1930, the Karshners shared:
"The aim of the memorial school museum is to improve a serious local defect so commonly found in the public schools of our state. Book knowledge becomes valuable only to the extent that it can be visualized and thoroughly understood. As historical and scientific exhibits and demonstrations help to satisfy this pedagogical need, we feel a teaching museum should find a place in every school."

For generations, the Karshner Museum has been a place where learning comes to life for our students and community. 💙

Artifact of the Week: May 18 – 22

Cedar Softening Tool

This cedar softening tool, made from a piece of whalebone, was a vital implement for the Makah people of the Pacific Northwest. Used to pound and soften strips of cedar bark, it transformed the tough, fibrous material into a pliable form ready for weaving. This process was a crucial first step in creating a wide range of essential items, including baskets, mats, and clothing.
