Have you ever heard that squishing an ant will cause others to go away? The fact is, the opposite is true. When an ant is squished, it releases pheromones that can attract even more ants to the area.

For more than six decades, SCJ researchers have been working to understand insects, reduce the annoyances they cause and help prevent the diseases they may carry. Our first insect research center, the SC Johnson Center for Insect Science and Family Health™, opened in 1957. Today our researchers continue to study insect behavior and the best pest-control strategies.

Following the 30-minute film screening, producer/director David Busse shares the story of his quest to document the swallows from daily fieldwork to deep research and collaboration, plus insights into the filmmaking journey. The evening concludes with a live Q&A with Busse and Hoy Audubon Society.

This past weekend, more than 70 SCJ people and their families gathered at North Beach in Racine for the annual SC Johnson Earth Day Beach Cleanup. Working together, volunteers helped clean Lake Michigan’s shoreline and surrounding areas, filling dozens of bags with waste.

We’re proud to continue supporting initiatives in our local community that help create a cleaner, healthier world for all.

Clean isn’t just something we see, it’s something we smell.

Research shows people often judge whether a space is clean by scent, sometimes even more than by appearance. Familiar notes like citrus, herbs, or soft florals can quickly signal that a room feels fresh and cared for.

That’s why behind every fragrance in SC Johnson products, including Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day®, there’s an intentional balance of science, memory, and sensory design, inspired by everyday rituals and the natural world.

Plastic’s versatility, durability, and affordability have made it an essential material. At the same time, it has become a growing pollutant impacting ways of life around the world.

The second film in our human‑interest series, created in partnership with Rainshadow Films and River Roots Productions, “The Human Side of Plastic: Abby Barrows” explores the effects of plastic pollution on Maine’s lobster fishing and aquaculture industries.

The film follows microplastics researcher and oyster farmer Abby Barrows, owner of Deer Isle Oyster Company, as she works to identify sustainable solutions to protect coastal livelihoods.

Abby’s story highlights that individual action can only go so far. We need stronger regulation to drive change at scale.

Sixty years ago, the SC Johnson-commissioned film “To Be Alive!”, won the Academy Award® for Documentary (Short Subject). Premiering the opening day of the 1964-1965 New York World’s Fair, visitors flocked to a distinctive golden pavilion that quickly became one of the fair’s most popular attractions.

Inside, they experienced an 18‑minute film celebrating the shared joys of childhood around the world. Guided by the fair’s theme, “Peace Through Understanding,” H.F. Johnson Jr., SCJ’s third-generation leader, championed the project as a powerful reminder of our common humanity.

By the fair’s close, more than five million people had seen the film and the 1966 award recognition affirmed a bold belief that some decisions—especially those made in service of a better world—are “only for the brave.”

Today, “To Be Alive!” continues to play at our Golden Rondelle Theater in Racine, Wisconsin, inspiring new generations just as it did in 1964.
