Housing the first state-sponsored art collection in the US, the North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA) promotes cultural inspiration and creativity, with free access to the arts. Whether in our galleries showcasing the People’s Collection (the permanent collection belonging to the citizens of North Carolina), or our outreach programs in all 100 counties of the state, or our 164-acre Museum Park, we s

trive to create a sense of welcome and belonging for all. With works representing more than 5,000 years of art history, our collection serves as a valuable cultural resource for both North Carolina and the nation. The Museum Park, including site-specific artworks exhibited among the native flora and fauna of NC, encourages reflection and play in novel, natural contexts. Our seasonal rotation of special exhibitions, performances, classes, lectures, films, and family programs fosters community, offering visitors opportunities to experience art, learn about art, and create art.

Please join us on Friday, June 5, for a screening of "Always Looking: Titus Brooks Heagins," a 2025 documentary that delves into the work of photographer Titus Brooks Heagins, whose photos highlight the systemic neglect of society’s most vulnerable.

His humanizing yet confrontational photos document those marginalized by poverty, race, and gender/sexual identity. The film also explores Titus’s own challenges in capturing the stories of outsiders while posing the question “who can tell whose story?”

Interpreted by Rainbow Dance Company Director of Dance Kathryn Auman, this Saturday's free "Still. Moving: Zonal Harmonic 170,000 and Zonal Harmonic 220,000" performance will explore the unseen architectures that shape how we move, gather, and belong.

Inspired by Tomás Saraceno’s vision of airborne networks and interspecies connection, Rainbow Dance/Arts Together will perform a piece that considers the body not as an isolated figure but as part of a larger, vibrating system—held in tension, resonance, and relation.

A brief talkback with Auman and the dancers follows the performance.

Join us in West Building at either 11 am or 1 pm on May 30 to see art in motion - and watch the video to see clips of Rainbow Dance/Arts Together's previous Still. Moving interpretation of Yoan Capote's "Isla (Tierra Prometida)."

A new study by researchers from University College London shows that engaging with arts and culture is as beneficial as physical activity - and at the NCMA, you can do both!

Whether you peruse the People's Collection and its 5,000 years of art, take advantage of our 164-acre park and trails, or participate in one of our Mindful Museum, Accessibility, or workshop programs, the NCMA offers both mental and physical exercise.

One of the most fascinating relationships among objects featured in the NCMA’s latest exhibition, Knowing the West, can be found in the show’s first thematic section, which questions whose stories about the West have been amplified and whose have been overlooked.

Click the link to read the NCMA Blog and learn how two works displayed side by side in Knowing the West tell a story of artistic innovation and collaboration within the Pueblo and Native communities surrounding Santa Fe ➡️ https://bit.ly/4uybSeF
