Racing Magpie is a Lakota-centric arts and culture organization, founded in 2015 in Rapid City, South Dakota, to center the Lakota practice of being a good relative in everything that one does. Our work is focused on elevating and amplifying the ongoing work of community-based artists and culture bearers through studios, a Native Art gallery, arts and cultural programming, and creative community space.

❗The deadline to submit your films and stories for our first Scary Storytelling event is Sunday, October 4th 11:59 pm MT.❗

The event itself is planned for the evening of Friday, October 30th (more information to come!)

👻 If you are a filmmaker, writer, or creative who has a scary story you'd like to share for the Halloween season, please complete the form below:

We will have a small in-house review during the month of October to make sure we have a perfect line-up that will fit with the timing and theme.

All films and readings chosen for the event will receive a small stipend as a thank you for sharing your talents!

A massive thank you to Jeremiah Moreno and Helene Gaddie for presenting and sharing their knowledge! Jeremiah led an awesome presentation and practice on Handgames and Helene shared her knowledge on traditional plants and helped our participants make their own medicine bags.

What if we spent an evening celebrating Native horror stories this October??

We’re kicking around the idea of hosting an informal/small horror story festival (still workshopping a name, please feel free to send suggestions!) in late October to showcase the incredible Native storytellers (filmmakers and writers) in our community along with a crowd of people who love sovereign storytelling. Ideally, we’re looking to screen a few short films or story readings that fit the season, but could also be appropriate for a diverse audience. We're thinking ancestral creature features, haunting folklore, scary thrillers, etc.

Are you an Indigenous filmmaker or writer with a horror short or work-in-progress? Would you be interested in submitting your work for this event? Selected projects will receive a small stipend.

Please comment below if this is something you'd want to attend, you have a film/story ready to go, or you have ideas/feedback for us. We'd love to make this happen, but also want to make sure it's the right fit AND possible for our time frame.

Join us next Thursday, August 20th for Traditional Plants w/ Helene Gaddie from 5:30 to 7:00PM as we dive into traditional plants and how to harvest them!

The deadline for the Fall 2026 Sinew Fund grant is THIS THURSDAY, August 13th, 2026 11:59 PM MT.

We want to support Oceti Sakowin creatives that specialize in visual art and center their Lakota community. (For example, free public workshops teaching your medium, free public art installations in unlikely places, a collaborative community art exhibition or zine, etc.) Think out of the box!
