I’m thrilled to announce that I am now a National Geographic Explorer! As a I will be telling the story of the Chickasaws’ first encounter with Hernando de Soto and the conquistadors during the winter of 1540-1541 through eight innovative vignette paintings using ledger art.

I’ve been eager to share this news since last October, and honestly, it took me about two weeks to pick my jaw off the floor from the shock of it all. This story has been in my heart and mind for 40 years, ever since my grandmother Caroline first shared it with me. I am immensely proud and grateful to Nat Geo for this opportunity to tell this story in my own way.

There’s still a lot of processing happening and I am so grateful for all the support I have gotten so far on this project. As of now I’m deeply involved in the planning stages and about to start implementing them i’m going to lighten my load as far as art markets go for the next couple years and only doing Chickasaw markets, keep an eye out for more updates.
