Inspired by my references of my trip to South Steens HMA, summer ’23. It was getting close to midday, I was feeling the summer heat rising. I contemplated giving up on finding horses. Instead, I decided to take a small dusty road off the main path and see what I could find. I was pleasantly surprised to discover two horses grazing in a big open field. One mare, one stallion. Despite my great distance, I could tell these horses were not accustomed to seeing people. The stallion was very attuned to where I was. Slowly and carefully I maneuvered around my car with my tripod and notebook. I didn’t want to scare or disturb. It’s these quiet moments where I feel like it’s a great gift to be able to have a window to watch, but not intrude. I worked quickly and didn’t stay too long so they could enjoy their grasses in the summer sun. This is the first painting in the sequence of backcountry stallion Zain.
