In October 1962, as tensions escalated during the Cuban Missile Crisis, daily life in Cuba continued under extraordinary circumstances.

With many men called to militia units, women stepped in to keep factories running, sustaining essential work across the country.

This photograph offers a glimpse into that reality, highlighting the collective effort and resilience that shaped life beyond the headlines.

𝙃𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙎𝙚𝙘𝙪𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙮: 𝙄𝙢𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙨 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙀𝙥𝙞𝙘𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘾𝙪𝙗𝙖𝙣 𝙈𝙞𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙡𝙚 𝘾𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙨 offers a rare, intimate look at life inside Cuba during those 13 days.

Some objects carry more than function. They carry memory, knowledge, and a relationship with the natural world shaped over generations.

Currently on view, this Tlingit halibut hook from the 1950s reflects remarkable craftsmanship and deep understanding of sustainable fishing practices developed by Indigenous Peoples of the Northwest Coast. Designed with intention, every material and curve served a purpose.

A huge congratulations to MFA candidate (and Lilley team member) on the presentation of his thesis exhibition, Endless Witness, now on view at Student Galleries South. Daniel's printmaking practice has developed over the past three years, culminating in a challenging and immersive installation that places us in direct confrontation with social media mediation and images of state control. Don't miss the shadows on the walls. Congratulations Daniel!

Don't miss your chance to explore the remarkable photographic work of Ayana V. Jackson on display at the John & Geraldine Lilley Museum of Art.

Jackson is a prolific photographer whose practice examines how Black women’s bodies have been imaged, circulated, and misrepresented across the diaspora.

The works in this exhibition span the range of the artist’s practice from 2013-2023 where Jackson draws from European modernism, Black equestrian histories, and colonial portraiture.

The photographic practice of Steven Seidenberg explores a material world of the unnoticed, fixing attention on structures, environments, and landscapes often hidden in plain sight.

Three photographic series are combined in this exhibition; each focus on past and present living conditions in a different area of the world (Puglia and Rome, Italy; Kanazawa, Japan).

Seidenberg’s richly detailed images capture current and former living spaces (houses, tents, outbuildings, and empty lots) providing the viewer with ideas about the lived environment, how space is used, and how humans travel through and live within the spaces they occupy under wide-ranging material conditions.
