THANK YOU for the overwhelming interest in our scanning project! We should have enough volunteers for now, but will post again if that changes. ☺️

Special request: We are in need of a volunteer or two to scan photos and documents in Rensselaer to help preserve the history of people and places of Jasper County.

We have equipment and can train. Basic computer skills would be beneficial. 2-4 hours/week (usually Thursday mornings). Students and adults are welcome.

Please inquire through FB Messenger or at [email protected].

Thank you for your consideration.

The first national observance of what would become Memorial Day occurred on May 30, 1868. Then known as Decoration Day, the holiday was proclaimed by Commander-in-Chief John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) – a fraternal organization of veterans – to honor Union soldiers who had died in the American Civil War.

The Jasper County Historical Society and Museum has quite a bit of information about our local GAR chapter. You can see some of our GAR and military artifacts in our Museum and at the new Jasper County Welcome Center on the Square in Rensselaer.
