Mrs. Sage’s Third-Grade Class Visits Museum!
Last week, Mrs. Sage’s third-grade class took a field trip to the Historical Society Museum. To begin the visit, board member Nancy Morris explained what museums are and why they are so important to every community.
The students especially enjoyed the museum’s Native American section, presented by Terry Knapton, who is well known for his work in promoting Native American culture and rights. He has been involved in various initiatives aimed at preserving Indigenous languages, which the students found fascinating.
Next, Rob Slagle, former owner and pharmacist, introduced the class to the Republic Drug Store exhibit, where most of the items were donated by the Slagle family. The students learned that the Republic Drug Store has served the community for generations! In 2021, the store was purchased by the Ferry County Hospital District—helping preserve an important piece of local history.
Board member Jay Jurgenson spoke with the students about the mining exhibit, guiding them through the region’s rich mining history—from the days of early prospecting to the development of underground operations. A lifelong advocate for preserving Ferry County’s heritage, Jay shared his personal memories and enthusiasm, helping bring the county’s mining past to life for the students.
For some extra fun, museum member Jen Croft introduced the kiddos to geocaching! The students learned the basics and even had time to find some treasures. Jen’s enthusiasm made the activity especially exciting for everyone.
A special thank-you goes to Mr. McRae, and Debbie Almquist for arranging this ROAR field trip to the museum! Everyone had an amazing day exploring and learning more about Ferry County’s history.
