The Abram Gaar House and Farm or known as the Gaar Mansion is a Second Empire Victorian home located in Richmond, Indiana, built in 1876 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The home was built by industrialist Abram Gaar, president of Gaar-Scott and Company, manufacturers of steam engines and threshing machines from 1842-1911. Total construction cost of the home was $20,000 it took eight months to build. The house is situated on a rise overlooking the city of Richmond from the north. Gaar hired John A. Hasecoster, the area's leading architect of the day to design the house and his original plans drawn on linen sheets are on display at the house today.

For Several years it has been my desire to document the history of my Gaar ancestors who emigrated from Bavaria to the New World in 1732, settling in Wayne County, Indiana in 1807. It is the story of one of the County's first pioneer families. And it is the story of a people who helped build Richmond's Nineteenth Century industrial community, with the founding of Gaar, Scott and Co., a National and International Manufacturer of farm machinery. Joanna Hill Mikesell
Here is the story of the Gaars and their Company. It begins with their emigration to America from Bavaria in 1732, their original settlement in Pennsylvania, their later migrations to Virginia and finally to Indiana. This Chronicle of the Gaars is a real American Story, full of all the joys and sorrows, successes and failures of taming a wilderness and building a pioneer industry. Jean Prichard

Ryan's Flooring was having trouble getting an engine to pull the Polar Express during Richmond's Christmas Parade. But what to the wondering eyes did appear but a Gaar Scott engine. The 1912 Gaar Scott engine lead the parade pulling the Polar Express. This engine was manufactured in Richmond by the Gaar Scott and Co. The corporate office is now the corporate office for Ricmond Baking Company.

Thank you to Carter Lumber and B& B Construction for the new siding to the O.E. McGraw Harness Shop at the Gaar Farm. The Harness Shop has been at the Gaar Farm since 1983. It was purchased by Richard Mikesell in 1971 when Mr. McGraw retired at the age of 96 from making harness and repairing horse equipment. After Mr. Mikesell's death, the Shop was placed next to the Gaar Mansion in 1983 and became part of the Foundation. The Gaar Foundation has shared this piece of Centerville, Indiana history for the past 35 years.
