Original paintings inspired by the travels of the artist

There is something especially meaningful about seeing a painting find the person it was meant for.
Recently, Autumn's Essence found a new home with a collector of my work.

Not long afterward, that same collector asked me to bring another painting, The Red Hawk, back to Crossroads Art Center. She had a special purpose in mind for that one — a birthday gift for her husband. I'm happy to say The Red Hawk has now found its home, too.

As an artist, I spend so much time with a painting before anyone else experiences it. Then someone sees it, connects with it, and the painting becomes part of an entirely new story.

I'm especially touched when original art is chosen to mark a meaningful occasion. Long after the celebration has passed, the artwork — and the memory attached to it — remains.

There is nothing quite like experiencing original artwork in person.

Photographs allow me to share my work with people near and far, but standing in front of an original is different. You can see the texture, the subtle shifts in color and the details that don't always translate through a screen.

I'm fortunate to have a large gallery space at Crossroads Art Center in Richmond, where you'll find a collection of my original paintings together in one place.

The space is always evolving. Paintings leave for new homes, new work arrives, and every so often I step back and rethink the collection entirely.

That's exactly what I'm preparing to do now.

If you're in the Richmond area, I hope you'll stop by Crossroads, spend some time with the work and see what speaks to you.

And stay tuned — there will be some changes coming to my gallery space as I make room for new work.

I'm delighted to share that two of my paintings have been selected for the MidAtlantic Pastel Society's 10th Annual Juried Exhibition, Expressions in Pastels.

Place of Dreams was inspired by the beautiful gardens at Claude Monet's home in Giverny — a magical place I was fortunate enough to visit. I still remember the gardens, the light, the color... and even the lovely chickens wandering the property!

Perhaps it's fitting, then, that my second painting in the exhibition is The Barnyard Shuffle, featuring one of my favorite subjects — chickens and a gorgeous rooster.

I'm honored to have both works included alongside so many talented pastel artists.

I am honored to share that Where Light Plays received Third Place in the juried All Media Show at Crossroads Art Center.

This painting came from a place that has always been very personal to me.
I've felt a strong connection to the forest for as long as I can remember. It was where I played as a child, and even now, as an adult, I still feel something magical in its energy — the filtered light, the quiet, the colors and the sense that there is always something just beyond what we can see.

That feeling became Where Light Plays.

I wasn't able to stay for the evening awards presentation, but my granddaughter was with me at Crossroads that day and took this photograph. It makes the memory even more special.

Where Light Plays will be on view in the All Media Show at Crossroads Art Center through early November and is available through Crossroads Art Center in Richmond, Virginia. View the painting here: https://www.crossroadsartcenter.com/collections/linda-dessaint

I'm very grateful for the recognition — and especially grateful that a painting inspired by a place that means so much to me connected with the jurors.

Sweater weather has finally arrived in the South — and with it, a little Pumpkin Spice. 🍂

After all that warm weather, I found myself craving the brilliant fall foliage I love so much. That feeling became the inspiration for my newest pastel, Pumpkin Spice.
There is something about autumn — the changing light, the richness of the color, and those fleeting weeks when nature seems to put on one last spectacular show before winter.

At the heart of my work is a love of nature, color, light and the emotions found in everyday moments.

Finding my voice through art has brought me incredible joy, and my hope is always to pass a little of that joy along through my paintings.

One of my favorites is Market Blooms — a small pastel filled with color, energy and some of the things I love most about painting from nature.
