This Thursday is the first of our 6-part Ripple Effect workshop series to share the tools, knowledge, and connections needed to independently sustain youth arts programming in Richmond.

Workshop #1 is focused on Nonprofit Pathways: exploring how to navigate forming a 501(c)3, fiscal sponsorship alternatives, and much more! We’re so excited to welcome our friends Haus & Market Foundation and Consulting Agency | Online Education for Nonprofit Entrepreneurs two tremendous community partners who will be sharing their experience and perspective with attendees.

All of our Ripple Effect workshops will be held virtually, Thursdays, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. with the first kicking off this Thursday, June 25!

Leading the 2026 Atlas Artist Residency cohort are two incredibly talented artists and mentors: Niyah McGee and Brian Cannady II.

Both have been involved with ART 180 for years and they’re the perfect pair to help us lead this final cohort of student artists.

Niyah ☽ ✰ Niyah McGee ✰ ☽ is a Richmond-based artist who was one of the young artists participating in our 2023 Atlas Artist Residency. Since then she’s led ART 180 programs and held residencies with The Art Seen and Visual Arts Center of Richmond

Brian Brian is a multimedia artist with a focus on digital creation, whose work focuses on self-recovery, specifically recovering his sense of self and severed connections to Black culture, exploring these topics in mixed media to develop narratives that center Black experiences. Brian is currently in an artist residency with Chromophore Artspace

Their work with this year’s cohort of students will wrap up with one final ART 180 exhibition, opening Friday, August 7. Mark your calendars and help us celebrate these artists and ART 180’s legacy as a community.

Our final Atlas Artist Residency program is underway and we wanna take a moment to congratulate all the students from across Richmond joining us to be part of it. We’ll be sharing much more in the coming weeks about their projects, ideas, visions, and creations; all culminating in a final exhibition to close out our time, opening Friday, August 7.

As part of ART 180’s transition and closure, we want to ensure that positive, impactful programming for the young people in our community can continue in our absence.

And so we present, The Ripple Effect: a new workshop series aimed at artists (with or without teaching experience), educators, and individuals working in organizations serving youth. Across 6 weeks, we’ll share the tools, knowledge, and connections needed to independently sustain youth arts programming in Richmond. Compiling and sharing knowledge from our experience, our successes and failures, as well as the knowledge from other people and organizations can cause a ripple effect that we hope leads to more access and opportunity for enriching programs built for young people.

Sessions will be led by ART 180 leadership, local subject matter experts, and community partners. Each participant will leave with a resource toolkit including templates, guides, and a curated list of partnership contacts.

All sessions are free and open to the public and will take place on Thursdays, weekly from June 25 through July 30. Sign up for one, two, or all that you’re interested in!

We are so SO thankful for her grounding presence, positive energy, knowledge, insight, and guidance over the past year. We've had an impactful and challenging year to say the least, and we were only able to navigate it thoughtfully through her leadership.

We’re excited to partner with to host Protect Ya Neck, a one-day helmet customization workshop led by artist

Through illustration, storytelling, and personal style, youth will transform free bike and scooter helmets into wearable works of art that reflect their stories, creativity, and community. Inspired by the “Protect Ya Neck” by Wu-Tang Clan, this workshop is about protection in every sense protecting yourself, your creativity, and your neck of the woods.

The Bird helmets are designed for safety in public space, but through customization, participants reclaim them as personal and collective expressions of identity and imagination.
