Poe at the Pump House is Saturday, October 24th, at 3:00, 4:00, and 5:00 p.m!

Come for a tour of Richmond’s historic Byrd Park Pump House & listen to dramatic readings of Edgar Allan Poe’s greatest works! This historic building & its open-air ballroom offer the perfect venue for what has become an annual tradition at the Pump House. Each performance includes a 20-minute tour of the building followed by a 40-minute dramatic reading in the upstairs ballroom performed by the Poe Museum’s own curator, Chris Semtner. Proceeds are split between Friends of Pump House and the Poe Museum! 🖤

“Beyond the Grave,” by John Franklin Clark. Inscribed by the author on the cover page: “To / The Edgar Allan Poe Shrine with the Compliments of the Author / J. F. Clark / 907 Buffalo St. Johnson City, Tenn.” Copyright 1889.

This play concerns Edgar Allan Poe’s afterlife and concludes with the poem “Farewell to Earth” (1863) by Spiritualist medium Lizzie Doten (1827-1913), who claimed it was dictated to her by Edgar Allan Poe’s ghost 14 years after his death. The poem was originally published in her 1863 book Poems from the Inner Life. Clark acknowledges Doten’s contribution on the last page of this script.

This is a framed chromolithograph on board of “The Raven” by August Holland (1928-1998). The picture depicts a raven seated atop a bust of Pallas on the top left corner. The raven is watching a seated man reading in a chair on the lower right.

Primarily known as a maritime artist, August Holland also produced several illustrations.

Edgar Allan Poe died on this day 177 years ago. Poe’s death, although untimely and unfortunate, was quite the fitting end for a writer who created stories of true horror and mystery. Even in death, Edgar Allan Poe created a mystery that would live on forever.
