Richard Brenner was born in Germany and came to Texas at the age of 16, farming at Washington-on-the-Brazos. He later moved to Rosenberg in 1897 and established a blacksmith and wheelwright business there in addition to farming.

He and his wife had two daughters and three sons, Karl, Richard and Milton. All three sons enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II. Karl served in the Pacific Theatre, Richard didnโ€™t go overseas and Milton served in Italy. A member of the Texas 36th Division, he made the initial landing at Salerno on Sept. 9, 1943. After 5 months of battle in Italy, Sgt. Brenner was fatally wounded on February 3, 1944 dying two days later in the 15th Evacuation Hospital. He was posthumously awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the Purple Heart. He was buried in the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery and Memorial in Nettuno, Italy.

Have you ever wondered what some of the language is in the legal description of your house? What is a league? Have you ever read an old deed from colonial Texas and been confused by varas?

Here are some answers.
A vara is a Spanish unit used to measure distance and came from the name of a lance carried by judges or mayors that came to be used as a measuring stick. It is equal to approximately 33 1/3โ€. 1900.8 varas equals a mile while 5,645.4 square varas equals an acre.
Those settlers who intended to be farmers were given a labor of land which was about 177.1 acres or 1,000,000 square varas. Settlers who declared themselves ranchers received a league or sitio of land which was initially measured to be 4446 acres but was later standardized to 4428.4 acres.
A sitio is a Spanish word denoting a space that is or can be occupied by something. The word was used in colonial Texas to refer to portions of land set aside for specific purposes especially in land grants.
Many settlers classified themselves as both farmers and ranchers and were granted both a league and a labor. The Republic of Texas made headright grants which initially gave a league and a labor to heads of families and a third of a league to single men 17 years old or older. These grants decreased in size the later families or men immigrated to the Republic.

John Moore Jr. married Dorethea Guenther on June 17,1915 in San Antonio where the two met. Her parents were Hilmar L. Guenther and Marie Bachman Guenther. Hilmar Guenther died in 1925. For a time after his death, Marie Guenther lived with her daughter and son-in-law in Richmond. She was well loved as these Mother's Day cards attest.
