Center for Social Justice & Civil Liberties

Center for Social Justice & Civil Liberties A free museum and educational center committed to social justice. Admission is free.

The Center for Social Justice & Civil Liberties is located in a historical building in downtown Riverside, California, that was renovated and restored by the Riverside Community College District. The building is home to the collected artwork and archives of Japanese American artist Miné Okubo, the author of Citizen 13660. Our mission is to preserve, exhibit, and enhance the Miné Okubo Collection,

and to use this unique resource to inform the public about social justice and civil liberties issues. Through presentation of Miné Okubo’s life and work, as well as exhibitions, programs and digital archives that broaden awareness of social justice and civil liberties, the Center provides an ethnically diverse, 21st century American populace with insights into the American experience, both past and present.

The Body of Freedom is a large scale collaborative project uniting The Center for Social Justice & Civil Liberties, the Riverside Arts Magnet Program at Ramona High School, Division 9 Gallery, and the City of Riverside to support local artists in creating inclusive, community-based art workshops rooted in social justice and equity. Over ten (10) free, multidisciplinary, community workshops ranging from paper mâché, painting, poetry and mosaic art to upcycled scenic design, collage, community quilt-making and mural painting were offered to the public in the Fall of 2025 and Winter 2026. This year’s collaboration includes two new community partners: the Riverside Community Arts Association and the Mission Inn Foundation. Come celebrate with us!

Discover new ways to see and express the world through art in this inspiring Body of Freedom Workshop led by Community Artist Ray Fernandez. Participants will explore how personal experiences, emotions, and perspectives shape the way we view our surroundings.
Each artist will create a layered composition forming a symbolic window within the body of the piece. The outer area represents movement, energy, and emotion, while the inner “window” reveals what each participant wishes to see in the world: peace, love, kindness, or change. This reflective and creative process invites participants to connect art with empathy, imagination, and hope.
