The rain has moved out and it looks like pretty weather this weekend. Don't forget the CAR SHOW at the 5th Annual Star City Rockabilly Festival at the Virginia Museum of Transportation! Free to enter, and if you bring a car you get into the show for free (admission for others is $10 for ages over 12). Car show starts at 4:00 pm. Three great bands from 4:30 - 9:00 pm. Food, beer/wine, pin-up contest, and more!

Today, we honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation. Their courage, sacrifice, and devotion to freedom will never be forgotten.

On this Memorial Day, we pause in gratitude for those who made the ultimate sacrifice so future generations could live free.

From all of us at the Virginia Museum of Transportation and aboard Norfolk & Western Class J No. 611, we thank and remember our fallen heroes.

The Prairie Schooner Freight Wagon is similar to ones used by settlers heading west in the 1840s and 1850s. Each wagon was handmade and took several months to construct. They were outfitted with as much as 1 1/2 tons of food and other provisions needed for the long journey! The oilcloth side covers were the source of the name "Prairie Schooner."

These wagons were generally pulled by teams of two to four oxen, mules, or horses. Can you guess which animal was the preferred source of power for westward travelers and why? 🧐
