Historic Preservation Month – The Rochester Hills Museum Landscape

The month of May is celebrated as Historic Preservation Month in the United States and the Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm has been preserving our community’s history for 47 years!

The Museum is located on the site of the Van Hoosen Farm – an area settled by the Taylor Family in 1823 and served as a family member’s home until 1972.

Most of our early efforts to preserve this site focused on the buildings, but equally important is the historic landscape that has been carefully tended for over 150 years. The family cherished their property and provided excellent documentation through photographs and by writing about their passion for the seasons and their gardens. Here are a few archival and current images for you to enjoy.

The Museum grounds are open sunrise to sunset, seven days a week, year-round. The Museum buildings and exhibit are open Fridays and Saturdays from 12 -3 pm with a guided tour of our Farmhouse at 1 pm.

Historic Preservation is alive and well at the Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm.

May is Historic Preservation Month!

As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary in July, 2026, communities across the nation are reflecting on the people, places, and stories that have shaped our shared history. At the Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm we are proud of our community’s legacy – and even prouder to protect our stories and buildings for future generations.

From preserving buildings and our historic grounds, to protecting barns and interpreting cemeteries, we are committed to preserve and interpret the structures and landscapes that tell the story of early life in Oakland County.

Our historic setting in Rochester Hills is more than just buildings – they are the window into the lives of our earliest settlers, soldiers, leaders, workers, and the families who shaped our community. Everything we do is rooted in local stories.

You are invited to be part of the stewardship of our local history – visit the historic sites scattered throughout our community, enjoy a walking or bike tour, enjoy a vintage base ball match, attend the Heritage Festival, and become part of something that is bigger than ourselves – as we all strive to create a more perfect union.
