My long-time Rochester friend, Betsy Phillips passed away this Saturday. Deep and sad condolences. This took me a little by surprise. Difficult to consider the Rochester photo scene without Betsy. All my thoughts are also going to her daughter. The three of us had an intensive and creative collaboration at "Afterimage". I have known Betsy since I first came to Rochester in the Fall of 1994. Dan Neuberger introduced us. The three of us would meet on a regular basis at Camera Rochester, the Artist Breakfast Group, the Center at High Falls, the Arena Group, and finally as the small group of five who sat down to think of what a photo gallery on University avenue could look like. A sincere farewell Betsy and a huge thank you for what you brought to our lives.

A quick update regarding Sergiy Lebedynskyy’s work which I showed at the Spectrum gallery this January (“Arabat Spit / Healing Waters”). He has just been nominated as a member (and co-founder) of the Shilo group (Ukraine) for the international 2015 Discovery Award in the Rencontres d’Arles.

The whole portfolio of the matted prints will be at the gallery, and prints for purchase, until the end of this month (April).

NEW SHOW at SPECTRUM GALLERY, 100 College Avenue
April 2015

AMERICA'S ENDANGERED COASTLINE from Connecticut to Texas.
by John GANIS

John GANIS will be present and sign his book "Consuming the American Landscape" (published by Dewi Lewis).

These images have been made during a period of 2 years (2013 / 2014) for a project on which John Ganis, the photographer, embarked after the drastic consequences of hurricane Katrina and Sandy on the Atlantic coasts of the USA. Scientific research and evidence have revealed that in the next 80 years sea level is likely to rise by about 6 feet, flooding a lot of communities, some of which are still being built regardless of scientific knowledge about the combined effects of the warming of oceans (resulting in their physical expansion), the melting of continental glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica, the sinking of the Eastern Coast (the result of normal geological phenomenon that we have known for some time now). Short-term thinking, profit-driven strategies, and ignorance have transformed some of us into lemmings running for the fatal cliff (and as tax-payers we are all going to be financially responsible for them!) Ganis’s images and project stand as evidence and warning.
