Reginald Marsh's art frequently addresses the dynamics of city life, from a group of young women enjoying themselves on the Coney Island boardwalk to patrons at the burlesque hall.

Marsh's Ice Cream Cones and Isabel Bishop's Blowing Smoke Rings (on display to your right) were painted in the same year and they both depict scenes from New York City. A critic of the period wrote how Bishop's images of the workingwomen were more truthful renditions of urban living than either the "fancy counterfeits of fashion pictures" or "the buttocky satires of Reginald Marsh."
