Whether it is to commemorate a loved one’s passing, the birth of a new family member, to celebrate a loving relationship or a meaningful milestone on life’s journey, the people who choose Oregon Du Drops demonstrate that they are the nicest, kindest, most loving, thoughtful and understanding people we’ve ever met. Best wishes from Cat and me,
We hope you are not only surviving, but thriving; even amidst this current topsy-turvy economic and political environment and temperamental natural climate. We know that you will soon be inundated with holiday-related commercial posts, if you’re not so already, so, this will be our last message of 2025.
As we keep aging, Cat and I discuss the topic of when it will be appropriate for us to retire. We've decided, as long as we remain healthy, to continue on a year to year basis. So, we are determined to stay open through 2026 (at least). We’ll make another announcement about our plans for the future next October.
We are not raising prices for the rest of 2025; we may very likely have to in 2026 due to tariffs on countries where we get our brass bells and our natural and man-made crystals, and due to continuing inflation in the US where we get our shipping boxes, packing material and other necessary supplies. I just wanted to give you a heads-up before that happens.
Order early if you want a made-to-order Oregon Du Drop before the holidays; 4-6 weeks from order to delivery or pick up. Order early if you want to order an Oregon Du Drop from our current inventory; 2-3 weeks for delivery for already-made Du Drops. You can view them on our website.

An August Thanksgiving

Getting Black Friday off Thanksgiving’s Back

A toxic, eroding, commitment to commercialism has engulfed arguably, the most sacred holiday we have celebrating The United States of America and turned it into the gateway to Black Friday. Thanksgiving’s former significance has been all but neutralized by Black Friday whose onslaught of incessant sales pitches start breaking into our consciousness from the internet, television, radio and print, ad nauseam at Halloween.

The current situation is quite oxymoronic with people sitting down to a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, their heads bowed in reverence, with the repetition of, “Sales start at 4pm.” echoing in their heads. Giving thanks while lusting for the next over-indulgence can and does cause cognitive dissonance leaving one important idea behind: Thanksgiving.

I believe we can take a small, but insulating step away from commercialization toward appreciation, for at least a day, with an additional Thanksgiving Day. I propose that we declare the last Saturday of August “Black Friday-free Thanksgiving” for ourselves and those closest to us who wish to participate. Eventually, we’ll just call it Thanksgiving, when Black Friday has completely consumed our traditional holiday. Until then, we can still celebrate it too, as best we can.

I propose that we celebrate a day dedicated solely to giving thanks. August has no major holidays of its own (yet), if you don’t count Sea Serpent Day (7th), or National Middle Child Day (12th), or, my favorite, Bad Poetry Day (18th). Celebrating on a Saturday is also appropriate because more people can participate on the weekend.

We don’t need Congressional approval to share the idea of a commercial-free Thanksgiving. We don’t need a petition campaign to gather with loved ones over a wholesome meal in an atmosphere of genuine thanksgiving.

I am not looking to convert anyone contrary to their inclinations or beliefs. I am looking to share this idea of a Black Friday-free Thanksgiving on the last Saturday in August (on the 30th this year), with like-minded people, so folks who share similar sentiments can participate. If you agree, there is no organization to join and nowhere to contribute (except your local food bank), just bring to mind all we still have to be thankful for and, if you like, have your gathering!

If this idea accords with your feelings please share it with your family, friends, social media contacts and anyone you think might be interested.

Speaking of local food banks, Oregon Du Drops donated 25% of our gross income for the last week in July to the North Tillamook County Food Bank and we plan to do the same for August. So, if you order or come in and choose an Oregon Du Drop in the next week, you will be supporting the food bank with 25% of your purchase price.

Hunger is a lonely place, especially if you are a child, especially if you don’t know when or where your next meal is coming from, or even if you will eat again. That is why Oregon Du Drops supports the efforts of the North Tillamook County Food Bank and is donating 25% of our gross sales amount for the rest of the month of July to them.

You can participate by purchasing an Oregon Du Drop knowing that 25% of your purchase price is going to help feed hungry kids and others who don’t have the resources to buy food for themselves.

Because hunger comes every day, watch for another fundraising event in August.

Dear treasured friends and valued new acquaintances,

Hello again, finally. I got a lovely note the other day from someone who used to come visit the Oregon Du Drops Gallery often. She moved away and was wondering why she hadn’t heard from or about us for months. She asked if we were still in business. After twenty-six years of creating and sharing Oregon Du Drops, I am completely convinced that Cat and I are blessed with the nicest, most thoughtful, considerate customers in the world. The love and well-wishes we receive from satisfied clients are a wealth that financial remuneration can’t even approach. Thank you so very much. It makes me want to make every Oregon Du Drop better than the last one.

Where Have We Been?

In June of last year, a travel writer for The Oregonian came through Rockaway Beach. He and his wife stopped in our little shop and conducted a short interview with Cat and me. He posted his article on line with a short video of me talking about Oregon Du Drops. It immediately went viral on every imaginable social media platform. That led to us being inundated with a tsunami of visitors and on line orders from every corner of the country and so many points in between. I made the Du Drops and Cat greeted our in-store customers and packed and shipped the on line orders. We were so busy that it got to where people had to wait 12 weeks to receive a made-to-order Oregon Du Drop. That’s been reduced to 6 to 8 weeks again. Orders from our current gallery inventory that took a month this summer can be delivered within two weeks now that the major part of the deluge has subsided.

Committed to Another Year

At 73 I’m busier than I have ever been in my life (so is Cat, but I won’t give away her age) and enjoying every minute of it. To go from a walk on the beach in the morning to spending the day and evening in my studio creating Oregon Du Drops that have a special meaning for those they are intended is a lovely way to spend my life. And I love it. I believe I can keep this up for at least another year. We’ll just have to see.

Cat tried to retire, but loves the interaction with our walk-in Oregon Du Drop lovers too much and takes great pride in safely shipping Oregon Du Drops all over the country. She also continues to give mini-concerts of her original music to lucky patrons in the gallery. As she likes to say, “Our job is our joy,”
