Laurent House by Frank Lloyd Wright

Laurent House by Frank Lloyd Wright Noted as one of the best examples of Wright's architecture and interior design. When the home was built, the lot was considered on the edge of town.

Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home in Rockford, IL; the only building designed by Wright for a person with a disability and one of only 10 hemicycle Usonian homes. The Kenneth and Phyllis Laurent House is a single-story, solar hemicycle Usonian designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1949. The residence is a rare mid-century example of a handicapped accessible home that was designed to be both functional

and beautiful. Built of Chicago Common Brick and Red Tidewater Cypress, the house hugs the property and blends flawlessly with its natural landscape. The City of Rockford has since grown to surround the neighborhood, yet the area still retains its rural feel with large wooded lots and curvilinear roads. The home is a fine example of Wright’s Usonian architecture as exemplified by its smaller footprint, slab construction, carport, and outdoor connectivity.

Honoring Phyllis Laurent, born May 15, 1918. It was Phyllis' vision that inspired Ken Laurent to reach out to Frank Lloyd Wright in August of 1948 to request a home for them that would meet Ken's unique needs as a paraplegic.

Art Scene is only 2 days away! Be sure to stop by our Visitor Center (4627 Spring Brook Road, Rockford) to see a variety of artists and tour the Laurent House by donation! One of our featured artists will be Lynne Koenigsberger Townsend, also a longtime volunteer with the Laurent House.

After a 45-year career in graphic design, Lynne began painting in retirement. Despite limited opportunities for women in 1970, she built a successful career—becoming Rockford’s first female graphic designer, running her own firm for 23 years, earning numerous awards, and being named 1991 Ad Person of the Year. Though her only formal painting training was a 1968 class, she now pursues watercolor, continuing her creative work alongside community and environmental involvement.

We are excited to showcase the work of this weekend at part of spring Art Scene!

Drew Eurek is a Rockford, Illinois–based visual artist with over 20 years of experience, working primarily in oil, charcoal, and graphite. His work moves between abstraction and figuration, emphasizing line, color, and intuitive mark-making. Exploring the tension between structure and spontaneity, his layered compositions reveal a process of continual revision and emergence. Influenced by personal history and travel, Eurek’s paintings balance emotional immediacy with thoughtful composition, inviting viewers into a visceral, introspective experience grounded in shared human connection. As we look ahead to Art Scene this weekend, we are excited to again showcase the work of local metalsmith, Terry Poffinbarger.

Terry’s journey with copper began in 2002, sparking a passion for metalsmithing that still drives him today. Every piece is hand-crafted and hand-hammered, ensuring no two are ever exactly alike. By 2005, his work was already gaining recognition, juried into the first of 60+ shows and earning multiple Awards of Merit, along with media features.

In 2007, Terry expanded into jewelry and deepened his craft through advanced art training—including an immersive week studying vintage Arts and Crafts techniques with master Roycroft artist Robert Trout (Note: Frank Lloyd Wright was part of the Arts and Crafts movement.)

Stop by our Visitor Center (4627 Spring Brook Road) on Friday from 5 to 9 and Saturday from 4 to 9 to see Terry's work (shown by his wife Gretchen) and that of the other artists we have invited to exhibit with us. Remote parking and shuttle from Spring Creek United Church of Christ (4500 Spring Creek Rd).
